Louise Ross: Pragmatism versus dogma
A pioneer (and someone I adore) speaks at the Global Forum on Nicotine, and Clive Bates covers it:
Here’s a subtle observation about #GFN20 each year. Those claiming to be “experts” have an open invite, yet are not speaking or attending to share their ‘knowledge’.
Those experts who ARE attending & speaking? I’ve never seen ONE of them proclaim expertise.
Maybe it’s simply because smokers are already forced to be anti-social by being put in smoking areas. Maybe it’s the nicotine, or some other constituent in cigarettes… either way – I know the tobacco CONtrol and anti-nicotine crowd have (depending on where you’re from) – their panties, knickers, or shorts in a knot about even imagining nicotine has a “good place” in the world.
That’s how I like to picture them: uncomfortable, scratching their heads and picking their asses, in public.
I’m not sure how many times I’ve said this: If you are IN this industry, you MUST have working knowledge of your local (and state) representatives (and opposition). You MUST be PROactive. You MUST be JUST as concerned about THEIR concerns and answer those questions before your 3 minutes at a podium ticks quietly by on deaf ears. Certainly, out of breath – I’ve covered these and more as a consumer, HERE: Vaping Industry Trade Associations.
So this caught my eye, and you, in industry, should read it. Your business, your choice. The deadline is looming, and I’m still rooting for you.
“It is reasonable for states and localities, which can often move faster than federal regulatory bodies, to regulate tobacco products in a way that suits their constituents.”
I adore Michelle Minton. She wrote (among many things) this. This time she covers virtue signaling and disingenuous crocodile tears… from those who openly perpetuate the problem.
Just the title alone should’ve brought you this far down the page… It seems Professor Puff-N-Stuff in in need of a little ointment and of course, more funding.
The Surgeon General wants everyone to nod in agreement on some things. While some of you may, some of you may want to turn your head – as I’ll be taking a different approach for this blog. Let the record show, I’m being *nice.
U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams,(MD) decided to clarify all things youth, e-cigarettes, and ‘epidemic’ on his personal Twitter account.
(All tweets below and his account are found here, or in replies, here)
I found it intriguing (as did others) he would take this route. Of course, a disclaimer on his personal twitter feed states, for safety: “Tweets/RT don’t represent endorsement or my employer.”
There is no valid reason to threaten (adult) access to vaping products. There is no valid reason to threaten small businesses providing smokers the option of less harm.
Why is there is a risk of restricting, taxing, or banning less smoking in any form.
“Applying this proportion to the 2018 data would suggest about 4% of high school students are daily users (this compares to the headline 20.8% use in the past 30-days).”
WARNING: The following could, may, or might contain any or all of the following from Dr. Jerome Adams.
This was before the official announcement on Dec. 18th.
I thought teachers and parents couldn’t… but they’re everywhere… Think of the children™…
“Hard to obtain”
“Hard to use around adults”
“Few youth use any nicotine product (even cigarettes) daily”
( I thought they were “easy to conceal”, hiding them in plain site?)
🎯 Instead, let’s use past 30-day use as a better metric, showing “potential” to teachers and parents. Not only does it sound contrived, inflated potential is also scary.
While you ponder your denial of an epidemic coming up over the course of this blog, bring your nose closer to the screen. Sound out the words. Take your time. I had to!
🎯 Seeming indifference and denial is the biggest threat (not youth use).
Out of context, he’s referring to patches and other methods here.
🎯 1st tweet: Complete denial of the epidemic is the biggest threat to adult access. Complete denial. Huh.
🎯 2nd tweet: 30 day use (remember above) is a definitivemedically defined epidemic.
Again, below the “constant denial” is the biggest threat to less harm.
🎯 The second of the two is one of my favorite tweets. Feelings VS definitions on 30 day use.
Medical Definition of Epidemic:
“The occurrence of more cases of a disease than would be expected in a community or region during a given awareness.. A sudden severe outbreak of a disease such as SARS.” (Link)
The Carnival Barker’s definition of an “epidemic”
🎯 “If folks can’t accept using official medical / health definitions, then we can’t have a real discussion”. “
Medical Definition of Epidemic: The occurrence of more cases of a disease than would be expected in a community or region during a given time period. A sudden severe outbreak of a disease such as SARS. (Link)
🎯 Referring to an “epidemic” is a play on the word as an adjective, not as a noun. The bias of the definition “interpret data accordingly” and “metrics” – referring to 30-day use rather than ‘daily use’, as Clive described above, is propaganda.
Here, the “Primary threat” isn’t “him” or most public health advocates… it’s YOU.
🎯 He’s trying to help.
I’ll let you see the 3rd for yourself. Go on, now. Don’t be afraid.
Here’s sadly what happens when lack of information, education and contrived panics occur.
HE’s not talking about….limiting access.
🎯 Well – then there’s balance. But good luck!
On the third in this set, feelings, (not science or data) are bigger threat than anything he could ever say.
Below, his statement on the first tweet: vaping products work, but lack of balance is coming from “national sentiment”. Wait, sentiment is “an attitude, thought, or judgment prompted by feeling”.
The second, it seems what he posts is what the nation feels, or agrees with.
🎯 (Lots of obvious feelings, *oops I meant “science” in that Google alert on the third.) *I’m being nice.
Simply use “vapinglinks” at checkout for 15% off your entire cart!

🎯 Now, he’s clear. Education and awareness . Can’t do much about the feelings of parents and communities. It’s out of his hands.
2nd: ALL must say and do their part to preserve this option. Huh.
Third, good luck (again!!!)
🎯 This ‘existential threat’ — is because of “continual refusal to acknowledge” thing is really… *getting on my nerves. (*I’m being nice.)
Trying to be funny with a pun. Uh oh, parents and teachers again.
WHAT are YOU doing to help?
🎯 I’m very *relieved the Surgeon General is not basing his findings on feelings. Wait! We can all work together. Uh oh, feelings are in the mix. Then, it’s not a threat. (*I’m being nice.)
Parents and teachers…. a showdown, and needing more acknowledgement is apparent.
🎯 In fact, we all need to work together, or there will be NO OTHER CHOICE from parents, communities, teachers to push for elimination.
Acknowledgement again.
1st tweet below – the reference (out of context) is about approved methods to quit smoking here, but is true for vaping products (and mentioned) as well.
Second – well… *careful what you threaten, above you said “the threat isn’t from Government”. (*I’m being nice.)
On the 1st below, as a consumer, I expect you to do your *job. The fact becomes opinion. (*I’m being nice.)
On the 2nd, the ‘debate’ is contrived by effort, not real interest. Name calling. Appropriate or not, public official: feelings. If feelings are hurt, please see here, or here…
🎯 On the third, it isn’t lessened, the chances of being “heard” remain the same.
🎯 The 1st below – “respectfully you still aren’t listing to (or ignoring)”
2nd: “lessens chances….”
🎯 3rd: I will keep calling a contrived set of monthly numbers a fraudulent and fabricated epidemic.
Finally a bit more of the feelings and name calling – meh. You are a public official.
For “credibility” the Surgeon General states publicly:
🎯 1/3rd youth who vape are vaping marijuana”.
Wait, the monthly ‘epidemic’ numbers are 1/3rd marijuana use? Wait, one-third of the monthly numbers are not “nicotine”? And “advocates” are expected, threatened and almost demanded to “acknowledge concern” and *admit there’s a problem? (*I’m being nice.)
The office of the Surgeon General states “Surgeon General provides Americans with the best scientific information available on how to improve their health and reduce the risk of illness and injury.”
(*Updated* 1/29) In the duties of providing the “best scientific information available”, this is where he doesn’t in his role as Surgeon General.
Stated in one of the tweets above “complete switch to ecigs better than smoking many times”. So far, the Surgeon General has chosen to “dutifully”, unequivocally, with prejudice, advocate the regulation, restriction, tax, and ban of what is a far less harmful product.”
I once admired “authority figures”. I presumed I was always being told the truth by those holding offices, titles, and degrees. Then, by accident, I didn’t smoke anymore. Slowly, over time, I’ve found appearances, power, prestige, fancy titles, and proof by assertion from those in charge – *demand respect rather than earning or deserving it. (*I’m being nice.)
For me to subscribe to anyone coerced into submission, I’ll need to see facts first. In fact, I am concerned and want answers. In fact, I’ve been asking for answers. In fact, if I saw a concern:
In fact, to suggest “vapers” are not concerned or to accuse anyone of “not listening” or ignoring anything is *unprofessional and *childish. (*I’m being nice.)
I’ve been asking, and addressing this concern for some time.
Funny you *mention “indifference”. Along with others you are *berating, I have been “concerned”. (*I’m being nice.)
I asked the UCSF Children’s Medical Center for data.
In June of 2017I inquired with American Academy of Pediatrics President Collen Kraft.
In November 2018, I asked the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
For me, to “work” *together”, I’ll need to see more than claims of children consistently being “treated” for “nicotine addiction” and diagnosis of “brain damage” by pediatricians. I don’t find my request wanting case studies, data, progress, outcomes, results “unreasonable”. With a ‘meteoric’ rise, surely, these studies must exist. (*I’m being nice.)
I’ll need to see groups of children stealing patches and gums from Walgreens to get their nicotine. Those can be hidden from adults to satisfy the alleged “uncontrollable craving, seeking, and use of” nicotine in any and all forms.
“You don’t see nicotine junkies breaking into Walgreens to steal nicotine gum” ~ Aaron Biebert
So far, I’ve seen an orchestrated coordinated effort to convince the public of things that are *not true. (*I’m being nice.)
“You should fight for your lives and your health. It is absolutely irresponsible and dangerous behavior to ban e-cigarettes.”
~ Dr. Farsalinos
Added 012/06/2019:
From November 30th: “E-cigs and vaping as harm reduction not inherently a problem (though we need to continue research to ensure overall & max harm reduction)”………..
This is the only tweet I can see offhand worth its salt, and it is on his personal account, not the Surgeon General account.
Fig said it best:
🎯 “I blame Scott Gottleib and Jerome Adams & the multitude of other “leaders” of healthcare for their misinformation campaigns against vapor, for such vile lies that are coming out of our public health agencies. It’s zero wonder why public trust is fading.”
🎯 “Thousands of American vapor businesses are at risk of closing their doors & filing bankruptcy, because of the antics of Scott Gottleib & Jerome Adams.”

Let the record show, I’m being nice. Let parents and teachers do their jobs. I’ll suggest you man up and step up, or step aside, Dr. Adams. Otherwise, I’m a couple times behind on telling you to *kiss my ass. (*I’m being nice.)

You don’t know nicotine
“Convincing smokers that nicotine is addictive is a multi-billion dollar global lie.”
The “nicotine addiction” lie is about 30 years old.
I’m constantly and actively looking, like most consumers, for anything detrimental (new risks, more risks, less risks) that makes sense to my amateur and laymen’s eye.
I’ll let this speak for itself:
“No significant changes were observed when comparing the concentrations of exhaled breath in vaping and no vaping days. Even the exhaled breath nicotine concentrations in both conditions were similar. As expected, toluene, xylenes, benzene, ethylbenzene, and naphthalene did not show increases in the vaping days since combustion was not involved.”
Across my eye came an intriguing title. I was excited. At the top it has Glantz’s name on it, and – at the time of this being published, it is blank. So much for evidence.

As I plod along into my fifth year of this blog – It is primarily about vaping. In the process, I see Glantz, the anti-smoking rhetoric, the propaganda – and I’ve found it best to question everything, as I explain partially in this blog. As C. Frank Davis does in his.

On occasion, “professionals” take it upon themselves to have a chat on Twitter about different subjects. Not with consumers, mind you, with themselves. This week, I learned from Dr. Linda Girgis that “doctors in the US can’t follow UK guidelines.” I don’t even know what that means, but I’ll take a stab at it.
Evidently, science, data and research is “different” in the U.K….. It must be all those extra “u’s” used in words or something… or the dedication to junk science that opposes and contradicts colleagues across the pond.
Here’s a short list of other guidelines doctors in the US can’t follow… evidently.

UNTANGLING THE PREEMPTION DOCTRINE IN TOBACCO CONTROL
They don’t like being hindered for the Tobacco 21 movement.
In case you’re unaware, I want to be very clear of my position on Tobacco 21. 18 year olds in the United States are LEGAL adults. Period.
The “Tobacco 21” movement (in most cases) takes away both the legal right of an adult to choose to smoke and it bundles in restricting vaping products for 18-20 year olds as well.
“Preemption can be a thorny issue when it comes to assessing a local government’s ability to adopt tobacco control measures. Preemption arises in different forms, and a locality’s ability to address tobacco may be preempted by laws both within and outside tobacco-specific legislation.”
The University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins University joined in an experiment…
I’ll paste the fun stuff, you can read the whole article below:
I assume no humans were harmed or judged by how quickly they buried marbles and ate food. BOLD, underlining and italics are my emphasis… and joy to do.
“Obviously, humans are not exactly like mice, and these early findings can’t be applied to us.”
Limitations
The study does suggest that metformin may ease some nicotine withdrawal symptoms, due to its action on the AMPK chemical pathway in the brain. However, this has so far been tested only in mice, which were given nicotine via an implanted pump and injected with metformin – the drug is taken orally in humans – with withdrawal symptoms judged by how quickly they buried marbles and ate food.
While there are similarities in many of our biological pathways, humans are obviously not identical to mice, and these results can’t be taken to mean that metformin would be a suitable or appropriate treatment to help people stop smoking.

I know we’re a community. I’ve participated in surveys worldwide. I conducted one myself. This one is United States participants only and designed specifically with F.D.A. guidelines.
Because of the tweet from “Industry Documents” showing Philip Morris had tried a device in 1994 containing this link about a “CapillaryAerosolGenerator” (CAG) above…
What caught my eye in that article “HesaysthatCAGdevelopment waslessattractiveduetolegalchallengesabouttheaddictivenessofnicotine“….and that legal challenges of nicotine – of course -caught my attention… so I looked up “legal challenges nicotine 1994” on Google… because I’m an inquisitive and persistant bastard…
Which led me to this from 2001, buried :
“The effects of nicotine on the brain are similar to those of sugar, salt, exercise, and other harmless substances and events”
“There are so many findings that conflict so starkly with the view that nicotine is addictive that it increasingly appears that adhering to the nicotine addiction thesis is only defensible on extra-scientific grounds.”
Law Review Calls Out FDA For Destroying Vaping Industry
“The FDA reached beyond its scope of authority in passing the Deeming Rule, including a broad variety of what it defines as “tobacco products” to be heavily regulated, amounting to a burden threatening to send local shops out of business.”
Teen smoking rates dropped again despite the ever-popular assessment that e-cigarettes “could be” a gateway to smoking. Even this year, stories continue to manipulate public perception with titles like “heavier teen tobacco use” and content to conjure images of a pack of 8-year-olds smoking like it’s going out of style. I’ll get to the unicorn sightings, I know that’s why you’re here.
Also noteworthy, and no surprise, e-cigarette use is going up. Well, hang on to your hats. If e-cigarettes are a gateway to smoking… where are the new smokers? You ponder that question, I’ll keep typing.
They’re wrong, No Gateway
With the confidence of a unicorn herder, always good for a laugh ever-so-credible Stanton Glantz just below boasts “even non-nicotine #ecigarettes are a strong gateway to cigarettes…”and he’s wrong. He uses the word “are”. Not only is he wrong, he’s wrong at least twice.
If he were correct in his hypothesis, this would be a different blog. I trust grandstanding filled with babbling and buffoonery is forthcoming from Stan about how wrong he isn’t. (Blatantly obnoxious and wrong.) He’ll stroke his beard, fidget in his chair, participate in some pesky deposition, but won’t admit wrong, he and others have been wrong, and will continue to be wrong. With reports of youth smoking rates dropping to all-time lows, thousands of gateway enthusiasts like Stanton “Puff-N-Stuff” Glantz, are… well, I am happy to report as I did in August here, and here, wrong.
Teen smoking drops again
Teen Nicotine and tobacco use (smoking rates) dropped again according to the latest report from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) called “Monitoring The Future Survey”.
Use of traditional cigarettes has continued to decline to the lowest levels in the survey’s history.
Significant five-year declines-by more than half for daily use and for use of one-half pack or more per day-were reported by all grades.
Daily cigarette use was reported by 0.6 percent of 8th graders
2.2 percent of 10th graders
4.2 percent of 12th graders in 2017.
This was down from peaks of 10.4 percent and 18.3 percent among 8th and 10th graders in 1996 and a peak of 24.6 percent of 12th graders in 1997.
Expert Integrity In Question
Gateway Enthusiasts and Unicorns are out of work
Despite the valiant efforts of “experts”, despite an uncanny desire to invest in tactics like this to keep kids smoking, they’re smoking less. Now, due to cause and effect, the country has countless unicorns displaced and unemployed. Gateway enthusiasts and Unicorns are looking for work. Kids sure don’t smoke like they used to. Do what you can to save the unicorns, continue to question the integrity of experts.
Since the definition of nicotine is now tobacco, tobacco USE rates/funding are in jeopardy. (I predict next year the “tobacco use” will be put together with vaping in this survey, with or without nicotine). To my knowledge, not one city has made an effort to focus on the intended target: children. Instead of focusing on pre-teen and teen smoking (what I would consider 8-15 year-old juveniles), to educate that age group on tobacco use, so-called “experts” are insistent, despite the lowest smoking rates in history, on half-assed efforts and a lot of money aimed at raising the age of purchasing tobacco and e-cigs to 21.
Teens Are Smoking Less
While I was writing this blog, this came across my eye. (Thanks, Jenny!)
While all the “Tobacco 21” enthusiasts are running around feeling good about themselves, the teen smokers they should be spending energy on are already smoking. In this, it states the desire to raise the age to 21. Well. The paragraph above I stated 8-15 as the age range to educate, where (bold emphasis is mine) this study says:
“The mean age for the first puff on a cigarette was 11.7 years (n = 66). Youths who had stolen tobacco from a parent reported a mean age for the first puff (11.3 years), one year earlier than youths who had never stolen tobacco from a parent (12.3 years, n = 66, p = 0.05)”
Focus time on efforts, not control
11 year olds. 12 year olds. Why are they worrying about restricting 18-20-year-old adults again? Why are they not worried about pre-teen and teen tobacco use? Oh, that’s right, they’re experts. It’s pretty obvious a quick check with my untrained eye on the target age of when children first initiate smoking *in their own study* isn’t their expertise. Maybe no one noticed.
You would think efforts focusing on pre-teen smoking education before a potential problem occurs would be more fruitful, and the obvious primary focus. Instead, restrict adults from doing something that “they might do” as adults has become the idiotic trend.
As far as my personal view, I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again:
On teens: “If “children” are *already smoking, they’re *smokers regardless of age. Think of the children™.”
If these people worked on the…. they might work themselves right out …. of… a …. job . . . wait a minute….
This was added 12/19/17.
Unpopular opinion: I am totally fine with vaping among teens. Nicotine is a performance-enhancer (like caffeine in many ways) and the fewer teens smoking cigarettes, the better for public health. They are practicing #harmreduction.
Truth Initiative claims a gateway on August 6th claiming:
Even though the teen smoking rate has been declining, popular new e-cigarettes like JUUL are a gateway into traditional cigarette smoking and put a new generation of youth at risk of nicotine dependence. https://t.co/mbTOKWMGa2 via @USNewsHealth and @mg_galvin

VapesGiving Event Aims to Raise Huge Funding Goals to help Advocacy
Instead of focusing on what “can’t” be done, consider what CAN be done. Considering what is at stake, there is NO reason #VapesGiving can’t raise millions with this movement. This is beyondoverdue.
Companies, including manufacturers, are joining with multiple advocacy groups to raise what should be nothing short of millions to attain results at any and all levels.

Long-term vaping causes no negative health results [new study]
Last week, I inadvertantly skipped this article by Jim McDonald.
“They found that the vapers had no negative health outcomes, and in fact showed results that were virtually indistinguishable from those of the non-vapers.”
Indistinguishable. This study extinguishes concerns, certainly, as to a smoker switching or dual using, and the very few and hard to find, who may take up vaping as opposed to smoking.

With credentials at stake, two of the top (“self-proclaimed”) experts in the tobacco control world have had their reputations questioned this week. Both are were highly regarded by each other along with a select group of individuals. Both are under fire.
Both of the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty, of course, in a court of law.
Allegations
First and most serious are allegations of sexual harassment and retaliation by Professor Stanton Glantz in California’s University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
Certainly Glantz is another in the scope of accusations against politicians, Hollywood, and other places in the world.
Within court documents, it shows “in my opinion”, accusations of manipulation of research.
The full court documents, in this case, are available here.
Stan, according to his user profile at UCSF is”the Truth Initiative Distinguished Professor of Tobacco Control”. Well known in the anti-tobacco world, he has been no stranger to controversy over conduct with research in the past.
With the obvious larger issues at hand, and although not charged, Federal Research Misconduct *may, *might, or *could also stem from this case.
Research misconduct is defined as fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism in proposing, performing, or reviewing research, or in reporting research results.
Fabrication is making up data or results and recording or reporting them.
Falsification is manipulating research materials, equipment, or processes, or changing or omitting data or results such that the research is not accurately represented in the research record.3
Plagiarism is the appropriation of another person’s ideas, processes, results, or words without giving appropriate credit.
Research misconduct does not include honest error or differences of opinion.
Manipulation, deception, persuasion, abuse of power, control.
*The reason (not that I need one) I mention the research misconduct above is because of what Lorien says below.
Each time this happens, I hear the (paraphrase) words “a man in his position should know better”. I’d like to re-word that bullshit statement. NO man (or woman) should put themselves IN that position.
I do NOT understand why this is acceptable.
As we are learning, it's entirely too easy for men in his position of power, money & influence to do this.
