Our Voices: We, The People

I was LOOKING at the WHITE HOUSE.

Over the weekend, I took a little trip to Washington, D.C. to exercise my first amendment rights with a few friends. It’s kind of a thing, speaking my mind. Knock, knock, Mr. President.

On Friday, while I traveled to D.C., President Trump stated they’d be coming out with a “very important position on vaping” and mentioned raising the age to “21 or so”, as reported here. I saw that on the eve of what would be, in my mind, a historic showing of consumers the following afternoon. On September 11th, he’d already stated bans were coming.

It didn’t matter what I heard. The Office of Management and Budget had already cancelled appointments the week before. None of that mattered, we were already knocking on his WE, The People’s door. We were prepared to make a unified statement about our CHOICE for less harmful products remaining available.

Many had already arrived, more were on the way, and you could feel the passion.

I want to thank EVERYONE wearing those vests. They were invaluable in keeping this rally safe and smooth.

They said it couldn’t be done

Humor me: If you’d told me I was going to be in D.C. – at the White House – because I stopped smoking….. well – here I was with what I hoped to be thousands of others. Why? Because we’re adults. Because we’re consumers. And small businesses. And we’re all frustrated and angry.

We were in our nation’s capital – to have our voices heard, to exercise our rights and responsibility: “The right to freedom of association is recognized as a human right, a political right and a civil liberty” as so many had done before us.

For YEARS

We’ve listened to PHINO’s (Public Health In Name Only) lie. They’ve altered presentations. We’ve watched them conduct themselves with bias, without accountability, interpreting, manipulating, and misrepresenting “dangers” and hyperinflated youth data.

For YEARS

We’ve been completely dismissed… ignored. Preempted, with hostility. Talked down to. Talked over. Not included in the conversation. We’ve been lied to in court hearings, lied about in the press. Small businesses (and consumers) have been accused of “marketing to children“.

For YEARS…

…we’ve been called what could not be further from the truth: Addicts, Anecdotes, Bots, Impugners, Sheep, Shills, and worse. (I am kind of fond of being called a bot, though.)

For YEARS…

…despite the fact that there are plenty of examples of reasonable regulatory steps, “trusted public health experts” and non-governmental organizations quietly sit with mouths clamped shut, standing with hands open, choosing demanding (and hiding cowardly behind) Master Settlement Agreement funding, instead of putting forth effort by making an already less harmful choice for the world – better.

THOSE people hide behind the illusion of “helping”.

I’d heard “we should go to Washington” so many times, I didn’t care if there were 9 people or 90, or 900, or 9,000.

For YEARS…

we’ve watched politicians demanding (and recently invoking) bans for anything but cigarettes. We’ve watched media vultures – gnawing on every buzzword like “deaths” of unrelated, illegal products – to bring it all full circle… to regulate, restrict, tax & ban any and all forms of less harmful products, and flavors.

So yeah, I was excitedly in our nation’s capital… with a growing crowd of pissed off people fighting peacefully for freedom of choice against the threat of BANS of less harmful adult flavored products for everyone across the country, and quite possibly the world. If they could get away with this, what other abuse of power and criminal acts can non-governmental organizations and “public health ‘experts” get away with? Knock, knock, Mr. President.

NO more.

If you build it, they will come

While it may not have looked difficult for this to have been accomplished, preparations and logistics HAD to be handled. This was White House property. There was National Park Service & Secret Service to coordinate EVERYTHING with. There were all volunteer marshals for safety & logistics – and it couldn’t have been done without them in place.

The United Vapers Alliance planned & coordinated anything and everything that could have been thought of (<-video). This was not just pulling into the park with the family and having a picnic. This was the nation’s capital. Anyone or everyone “could” have been removed at any time by the National Park Service or Secret Service at their discretion – for the slightest infraction.

There were rules for everyone to follow & abide by. Restrooms were at least a ten-minute walk away. A first aid station. Assigned people for talking to the media. There were to be no bags left unattended. Permits to be obtained. We wanted to be HEARD, so stage and sound had to be rented and set up. Signs were ordered. Radios were needed. The coordination and the flow of speakers… cleanup… and leaving the park just the way we’d found it.

All we were waiting on were YOU, the people. We knew they were coming from Alaska, Georgia, Tennessee… New York… Ohio… Florida… and they were coming by the busload… some were already in the park and coordinating the days event.

Wait… Secret Service said we had to vacate the area, (we knew it could happen) because President Trump was flying out. When the Secret Service says move, you MOVE. Most went across the street to the Washington Monument.

This photo was stolen approximately one gazillion times from, and credit to: John Glauser

While almost everyone waited across the street, the President flew directly OVERHEAD… so he SAW us… He must have thought – that many people must be serious if they’re willing to travel, stay, congregate, and assemble peacefully as WE, the PEOPLE, in Washington, D.C. on a cold Saturday afternoon.

“History is full of disapproval of or objection to something “someone else” didn’t like.” ~ Me.

President Trump was gone, but We, The PEOPLE, were NOT.

The Secret Service were extremely kind and held traffic for us WE, The PEOPLE to get back across Constitution Ave. Here we are streaming back into the park after the flyover.

Back to business at hand, folks – back in the park we go. We’re coming back in…and more were almost here on various buses. (One of my photos.)

YOU, the people, came.

The vast majority of us use flavors. We’ve TOLD them that. It has been submitted to the FDA. Without linking it all, authorities HAVE data.

We came to speak our collective minds. We were #LOUDER. (Thanks, Sherwin!) We are, and have been tired of being lied to, lied about, and ignored.

Speakers spoke. The crowd listened. “We Vape, We Vote“.

How many were in the crowd? I don’t know the total number in attendance at this historic event, but I know I missed finding and meeting some of you. That’s how many came. So, speculation of numbers? More than 9, more than 90, and more than 900. Hats, hoodies & sunglasses disguised (us) some of you – but I found a few… gratefully, a few, like Amanda Wheeler, found me!

Image may contain: 2 people, people smiling, outdoor and closeup
The amazing Amanda Wheeler & I!

I wandered around – surfing the crowd –like a bot– listening to the speakers. Taking photos, taking the moment in – still dumbfounded I was standing in eyesight of the WHITE HOUSE with thousands of others who had simply quit smoking, having to FIGHT for our rights to flavors because we didn’t quit smoking the way “they” wanted us to.

Image may contain: 4 people, outdoor
Another image stolen by me and probably thousands of others by now (I don’t know who to credit!)

I saw familiar digital faces, some I didn’t recognize until I heard their name. I shook hands, got hugs, saw Brent Stafford from Regulator Watch covering the event. (See his site for interviews!!!)

Then, while behind the stage I heard Business Insider, Buzzfeed, CNN, Fox, NBC, NPR, and Vice (who said the rally “was relentlessly sincere“), were also there.

Rolling Stone was there. HUH!

One of my photos while James Jarvis spoke.

I said to myself and others about 5,000 times Saturday: “Holy shit, I’m in front of the White House. It’s about F’n TIME”. And just like that, harm reduction-this cause, is national news…

Whether you came or not, if you read this blog, YOU had a place here in Washington, D.C. on November 9th. YOUR consumer voice was represented. If you weren’t there, you were tweeting and flooding the switchboards (ring, ring, Mr. President) with calls to the White House.

I proudly carried this sign.

“We vape, we vote”.

What was the message? The message was “to educate the public and politicians regarding the benefits of harm reduction via vapor products, and will strongly convey that changes must be made, within the FDA, to provide an economically feasible pathway to market.” (Source) including FLAVORS.

Here’s 28 seconds of Gregory Conley explaining:

Here’s Alex Clark explaining:

You may ask – was this necessary?

After all, President Trump had already left for a football game. Was he listening? Did he care? I’ll answer: YES. Period.

Was this rally important?

  • Was it #LOUDER? YES.
  • Did it make an impact? YES
  • Was the timing right? I’ll get to that.
  • Did this rally change the conversation? YES.
  • Do I think we got our collective message across? Hell yes.
  • Was explaining how our voting power in swing states could change an election? Yep.
  • Was the effort and collaboration of consumers showing their faces in D.C. worth it? Hell yes.

Was it “worth it” to get national press, and for our President, the leader of the free world, explaining on Veteran’s Day, that he’d be meeting to come up with an acceptable solution in less than 48 hours after the event?

Pay attention to CASAA’s words: “...the MAIN STAKEHOLDERS in this issue are the millions of voting CONSUMERS who rely on these products.”

Abso-damn-lutely.

By any means, this isn’t over. This fight has just begun.

Consumers need small businesses, and small businesses need organizations who represent them all – to have their collective voices heard.

Two months after announcing his administration would “clear the market”- to the day, he decided he will “be meeting with representatives of the Vaping industry”.

Did this rally give pressure to change the President’s MIND or give pause to his decisions concerning our freedoms? I certainly hope so.

Link to tweet

The world was watching.

No one had done this before.

Will this event be analyzed or criticized? Possibly, yes.

Without question, We conducted ourselves in a civilized manner – and had some of the loudest voices in the nation representing you, the people, in a civilized manner.

I have hope that if you were unable to attend this event, you tweeted, called the White House, and saw that if it can be done in Washington, D.C., it can be done anywhere in the country.

I hope it inspires and motivates you to DO that very same thing in your area, and to show up at city and state hearings. I hope it inspires you to be #louder.

Thank YOU.

I’d like to thank ALL donors, speakers, organizations, and importantly, the marshals and all the attendees for showing up to help make this event HAPPEN. I’d like to thank the Secret Service and National Park Service staff for guidance and information crucial to having a successful event.

I thank consumers and small businesses who couldn’t make it, but called the White House, and tweeted, and write their representatives, and continue to keep awareness up all the time.

I thank Sherwin Mena, Tristan Thompson, Matthew Salter, Tammy Michaud, Matthew Elliott, Allen Davis, Cory Amedio, and Matt Culley for allowing me to join them in what was a pivotal and historic moment and effort for this community and cause I love dearly. Fighting for themselves, each other, you, small businesses, and future smokers who have the RIGHT to choose to switch to a less harmful alternative, with flavors of their choice…

Mike Peterson chats with Sherwin Mena, Nick Orlando, and James Jarvis about the rally here.

Jim McDonald just released his article about the rally over at Vaping 360, you can read it HERE.

On a personal note – I reflected quietly – with my mind racing on the drive home… about the awe-inspiring experience, realizing I’d been a part of history. I was VERY proud of us.

In hindsight, I have just one regret for November 9th… I didn’t think to call the White House to oppose a flavor ban between speakers, and invite the President to come visit us from the stage myself… of course, he’d already left for a football game.

Freedom of Assembly

If you’re going to Washington D.C. for this consumer rally, I hope to shake your hand. If you’re unable to attend, please know you are being represented by some of the most passionate consumers in the country who are defending your rights (and future rights of others) for keeping flavored products and less harmful alternatives on the market. Period.

United Vapers Alliance press release is here.

“The right to freedom of association is recognized as a human right, a political right and a civil liberty.”

Source

History is full of people fighting for civil liberties.

The history of the United States is full of motivated people. Immigrants came to find a better life, traveling in uncomfortable conditions for a better life, seeking freedom and civil liberties…

In 1920, the 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote.

Rosa Parks sat down on a bus in 1955 to defy unjust laws saying she couldn’t.

In 1963, there was a civil rights movement called the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom where Martin Luther King gave his iconic “I have a dream” speech.

In the 1970’s, students were gunned down here in Ohio at Kent State for protesting the bombing of Cambodia by U.S. forces.

In the 1980’s, protesting went directly to the FDA while their broken system would turn law abiding citizens, AIDS patients, into criminals.

What else will they take from Americans?

I’ve heard – since 2014 – we should go to Washington, D.C. and protest for our, and future rights to have access to less harmful alternatives. Now we are going… Like many before us, we will have our collective voices heard.

Is our cause as important as a right to vote or a right to have a seat on a bus over another? I believe it is the the exact same fight. Those same people expressed their rights, in the same way facing disapproval of, or objection to something “someone else” didn’t like. In our case, unjust laws, junk science, propaganda, and control are still being utilized to deny freedom and liberty of choice with the same disapproval and objection.

The freedom of assembly is part of our First Amendment. I plan, with a few of my friends and fellow consumers, to exercise that right in Washington, D.C. on November 9th.

The World IS Watching.

We are consumers. If you CAN attend this historic rally, you are taking your seat on the proverbial bus. This is FEDERAL property. Please know the do’s and don’t list.

On November 3rd, this is where we discussed logistics, planning and rules to the rally.

Please see Jim McDonald’s take on this here (short videos within from both Matt Cully & Grimm Green.)

WE, The People

October 1st, Columbus, Ohio Statehouse rally.

Consumers: WE, the people.

That’s YOU.

Over the past few years I’ve seen and heard variations of “we should go to Washington and hold a rally.” Well, dear fellow consumer we, the people, it is beyond time. Suddenly, when President Trump tweeted about vaping, we are IN the national spotlight.

Now is the time for we, the people to come together in one voice – and make our presence known in our nation’s capital. Millions have bravely gone before us, now it is our turn.

“Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”.

What does that mean to we, the people? As long as you’re of legal age, smoke if you like. Or don’t. To me, it means freedom of choice of a less harmful alternative to smoking.. and that includes flavors.

Boston Tea Party

I’m confident American small business owners and consumers alike are familiar with the history that helped frame the foundation of the United States.

Enraged by control, taxation, tyranny, and demanding freedom – the Sons of Liberty (merchants/small business owners) decided, defiantly, to throw themselves a tea party in the Boston Harbor. They became #louder.

Before this, boycotts and smuggling – black market – tea was prominent.

Now replace the word tea – with cigarettes. Next, replace the words “No taxation without representation” with “lessharmfulproducts“.

October 1st, concerned citizen from Akron attending the Columbus, Ohio rally.

This is our “Boston Tea Party”.

Despite efforts to circumvent the movement we, the people, vaping products are removing cigarette tax revenue from the government. That’s what small businesses and consumers we, the people, are doing. This is our “Boston Tea Party”.

#WashingtonDC. Harm reduction. We the people. November 9th.

#Louder.

Who

No photo description available.

The United Vapers Alliance (UVA) was formed as a 501(c)(4) organization earlier this year. The sole intent is to educate the public and politicians regarding the benefits of harm reduction via vapor products, and the right to keep flavors on the market as a consumer choice.

Why:

Because the government is WRONG. Our messaging needs to be clear, simple, peaceful, and united. Consumers, we the people’s rights are being infringed, restricted, and may possibly be extinguished by government actions and policy all over the nation. The time for silence is over. The time to be heard is NOW.  For too long, we have waited for our politicians to do the right thing.  No more.

“So whether or not we choose to believe the FDA’s stated intent to entertain the re-introduction of flavored vapes at a later date, this is, at least, a de facto permanent prohibition for smaller operators.” Source

THOUSANDS of citizens like Susan Ripley (below), have created small businesses, creating jobs by investing in this life-changing technology. Now they are fighting for their rights – along with ours.

Image may contain: 1 person, smiling, standing, crowd and outdoor
October 1st, Columbus, Ohio rally.

How:

United Vapers Alliance will LOUDLY inform Congress and the FDA, that if they do NOTHING, 99% of all vape products will be removed from the market by May, 2020.  United Vapers Alliance will fight for the right to live a less harmful lifestyle and see OUR children grow.

We are an estimated thirteen+ (13+) million strong, with families and friends who have seen the positive change that vapor products have provided.  If our politicians will not listen to our voices we, the people, then our voices will be heard at the ballot box this 2020 election.

Together, consumers will rally with ONE voice, ONE mission, ONE message, and will shake the very foundations of power in Washington D.C..

When and where

Footnote:

This Washington, D.C. voyage has the same importance for me personally as my trip to Milwaukee did. This is history in the making. Monumental. I want to stand beside you, the people, with some of the loudest voices representing our country, and to be heard. To change the conversation.

This country was founded on we, the people. Someone was standing up for your rights, the rights of others, and those generations who will follow. This country was founded on #louder voices. This is no different. I consider myself one who speaks for many. I hope to see you there, and don’t be shy. I’ll be the 6′ redhead looking forward to standing beside you and shaking your hand.

Vaping In the News – September 21st, 2019

NEWS

Vaping In The News covers nicotine, smoking, vaping, snus, heat not burn, e-cigarettes, harm reduction, tobacco control, public health, government, regulations, policies & more worldwide.

The largest threat to Public Health is an informed consumer.

Marilyn ~ Mark Slis (Scientist & Vape Shop Owner) ~ Compliance Checks ~ Speaking of Michigan ~ Flavored E-Cigarette Bans Propagate America’s War On Drugs ~ No Quarter for the Nicotine Folk Devils ~ Uncool Mint Research ~ Don’t Protect Cigarettes by Banning Far Less Harmful Nicotine Vapor Products ~ 14 Days to Prohibition: New York and Michigan Pass Flavor Bans ~ Flavors with Governors Cuomo & Whitmer ~

Marylin

Something like this always brings me back to where I need to be, fighting for the choice of consumers. It reminds me of Fiamma Palermo (Karen Lee) a few years ago, who used the #ImProof hashtag.

This young lady declares her right is her right to choose, and questions accountability. More of this please. I must admit, I’ve got a crush on Marylin. I’m smitten. Not sure if my wife will voluntarily move out, though.

Mark Slis (Scientist & Vape Shop Owner)

Another consumer, and more. I’ll let him explain it during his testimony after driving over 500 miles to do it.

Compliance Checks

Meanwhile, as Marilyn eloquently stated above, underage children are still breaking the law. Meanwhile, retail stores are still breaking the law.

James Jarvis shared a post on his Facebook page showing the latest current numbers of “compliance checks”. Then, he asks a question.

He did my homework for us, so I stole his post. (Thanks James!)

Year to date FDA Inspection data total US…

Total Inspections: 102,032
Total fails for Ends: 4,212
10 fails were for selling Logic to minors
22 fails were for selling Njoy to minors
84 fails were for selling Mark 10 to minors
499 fails were for selling “other” to minors
748 fails were for selling Blu to minors
1407 fails were for selling Vuse to minors
1442 fails were for Juul to minors
Total fails for vape shops: 212
Total fails for smoke and vape shops: 82
*619 of the fails had civil money penalties (so multiple offenses)

Breaking down Ohio: Total Fails for Ends: 177
Ohio Vape Shop fails: 3 ( same store failed 2 times)

Then he asked: “Tell me again where the youth are getting their vape products?”

Compliance Check Inspections of Tobacco Product Retailers (through 08/31/2019)

Speaking of Michigan

It is not all roses and candy in Michigan… Rep. Johnson got on “Mr. Eliquid’s” website… and made a determination.

We’re already looking for all we can know about e-cigarettes. Do you know why? We’re tired of everyone being lied to. Because we’re the stakeholder in the equation. You’re not.”

Governors Cuomo & Whitmer

May as well put criminals in one place.

Both Whitmer & Cuomo wants flavors banned. I’ve heard it may be because adults don’t like flavors! Neither do Senators.

“They want to regulate, restrict, tax and ban less smoking.” Think about it.

Governors, like Cuomo, seem to like tobacco-flavored non-governmental organizational front group flavored lollipops.

Image

Governor Whitmer, seen here enjoying a house full of flavored ice cream, beer, pastries, cookies, donuts, coffee and gasp, flavored cheese, does not like flavors either.

In fact, I’m under the impression she really likes flavors, including cherry, blueberry, and raspberry pie, but doesn’t want Michigan folks to have those same freedoms.

Ohio Vapor Trade Association

Image may contain: 6 people, people smiling, people standing, suit and indoor

“And active membership is much more important than a membership with a lot of people.” ~ Nick Orlando.

The Ohio Vapor Trade Association (OHVTA) held their 2019 conference on Tuesday, May 14th, where OHVTA President James Jarvis hosted Ohio State Representative Doug Green, and Ohio State Senator John Eklund.

Along with James Jarvis, speaking at the event was Ohio Rep. Doug Green, Ohio Senator John Eklund, OHVTA Lobbyist Charlotte Hickcox , Nick Orlando with Florida Smoke Free Association, Keynote Speaker Dimitris Agrafiotis of Tennessee Smoke Free Association, Tony Abboud with Vapor Technology Association (VTA), and Fig Ramsey of Vape Tithing.

Also joining the conference was Jonathan Varner, head of JVA Campaigns (OHVTA’s digital media firm), along with Kevin Boehner and Justin Zink of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce.

This meeting included an active power-bank of knowledge with insightful points of view, experience and education across the day-long conference with members from Florida to California. Industry guests spoke about current issues including lobbying, underage sales and proactively navigating the ever-changing landscape and future.

Image may contain: 6 people, people smiling, indoor

Changing The Conversation

OHVTA is changing the conversation with lawmakers.

Representative Green and Senator Eklund spoke to the group with sincerity about issues and answered questions. One question was about the best way to go about contacting them, and the answer was clear: email or phone calls. Their staffers take each call and relay it to them.

They want to hear from consumers and businesses, and – we were told, oftentimes lawmakers don’t hear anything about issues they’re voting on, so your call or email could change the mind of your lawmaker.

In Ohio, trying to define vaping products as tobacco and restricting adult access (Tobacco 21) is another concern to adults as another attendee, Lindsey Stroud (below) points out here.

If you told me 6 years ago when I switched that I’d be sitting in Columbus, Ohio for an event like this – I’d have called you insane.

Instead, I was honored to be invited to an industry event, attending this meeting with the perspective of a concerned consumer, much like when I attended “A Billion Lives“. With great concern.

Witnessing what I did, I discovered heroes with one common goal. What I experienced was listening to actively engaged members (and leaders) in this industry who are passionate about their business, their customers, and attain their goal: To help smokers choose a safer alternative. To educate lawmakers. To educate consumers.

Notably, these professionals are proactive about keeping those products out of hands of underage youth. Furthermore, those same people are concerned about politicians trying to take their livelihood, and your choice away from them, and you.

If Ohio is an example of how trade organizations represent the industry, I’m impressed. These people are part of the solution. These folks have a network and discuss experience with local, state and national issues with each other. Engaging. Inspiring. Proactive.

I left this meeting with a renewed sense of hope from these business leaders fighting for consumers who have switched and those who may choose to switch, despite government resistance for the choice to do so.

If you are a consumer, join CASAA. Be engaged. If you’re in business and you haven’t, BE ENGAGED. Join an industry group. I don’t care who you choose, but choose. Conduct yourself as if your life and lives around you, and your business(es) depends upon it. If you don’t, who will?

If you don’t know why, go here.

Vaping In The News – December 22nd 2018

news14

Vaping In The News covers media stories on smoking, vaping, snus, heat not burn, e-cigarettes, exposing tobacco control, public health, government, regulations, policies and more worldwide.

“The largest threat to Public Health is an informed consumer.”

The “Public Health” Industrial-Complex Behind the Anti-Vaping Push ~ Consumer Engagement for GFN2019 ~ Stevens Point leaders update e-cig ordinance ~ TCAPS Will Install Vape Detectors in Middle, High Schools ~ Altria board approves $13 billion investment in e-cigarette company Juul ~ We Need to Reduce the Harms of Draconian Tobacco Policies ~ Federal Officials Obsessed By Teen Vaping, But Ignore Teen Drinking and Toking ~ Before you go

The “Public Health” Industrial-Complex Behind the Anti-Vaping Push
Lobbying, restrictions, coordination, corruption, hysteria…  sounds like a coup to me.
“The anti-vaping push from public health organizations is coordinated, well-funded, and tied to powerful entities in government and corporate America. According to federal data, however, there is extremely limited evidence of any ‘epidemic’.”

Consumer Engagement for GFN2019

From our friend, Jessica Harding:

“The theme for GFN2019 will be  “It’s time to talk about nicotine” and it is vital that the people who use safer nicotine products are at the heart of that conversation.

The GFN organisers are keen to give an even higher profile to consumers and consumer organisations than in previous years and I have been asked to help with that.”

Consumer Engagement for GFN2019

Stevens Point leaders update e-cig ordinance

The article states city leaders voted across the board to “make it more difficult to get e-cigarettes in the hands of teens.

Now – it’s a fifty-dollar fine and possibly a court appearance if a minor is caught with one. Among other anomalies in the article (my bold/underlining for emphasis):

“Officers in Stevens Point previously had to prove if the cigarette had nicotine in it but it wasn’t possible to test in the field.”

Unsurprisingly, it doesn’t mention fines or consequences for cigarettes or the Synar Amendment.

TCAPS Will Install Vape Detectors in Middle, High Schools

Read this sentence, a quote from the video:

“Our goal here is to do more of a deterrent…not necessarily catch students…but deter students”

Now – if you must read it again…

I for one can’t imagine any kid figuring out how to get around this… and for the record, were there or will there also be “smoke” detectors?

TCAPS Will Install Vape Detectors in Middle, High Schools

Altria board approves $13 billion investment in e-cigarette company Juul

Imagine all the hard work and ‘investment’ put forth by Tobacco Free Kids to obtain this kind of coverage?

Altria board approves $13 billion investment in e-cigarette company Juul

We Need to Reduce the Harms of Draconian Tobacco Policies

Nothing says “tell people what to do” more than telling people what to do and how not to do it – and getting paid to do so from those very people.

See, discrimination, embarrasment, fines, taxes, custody battles, imprisonment, executions… well, any means necessary to get people to do what you want them to do are clearly the best…

Wait a minute…

Via the well respected Marewa Glover, down the rabbit hole you go.

We Need to Reduce the Harms of Draconian Tobacco Policies

Federal Officials Obsessed By Teen Vaping, But Ignore Teen Drinking and Toking

Brad Rodu… you can’t ask for better.

ECigIntelligence Annual U.S. Consumer Survey 2018

INfo.JPG

Real People, Real Answers

It’s survey time for U.S. consumers. The largest consumer group in the United States, CASAA, and EcigIntelligence have teamed up once again for you (and all your friends who use e-cigarettes) to take and share the survey. I completed it in approximately 10 minutes.

Data and research are important.

Challenges in the United States are far from over. Your voice counts. As a consumer, your data is both necessary and imperative.  Information obtained from surveys can be (and are) used by consumer and trade groups to inform our local, state and national legislators, regulators, media, research, along with public health officials and importantly, other consumers are able to consider making an informed choice to switch to a less harmful alternative.

A word from Alex Clark:

“Once again, CASAA is pleased to share the annual ECig Intelligence consumer survey with our members. As you may remember from previous years, CASAA works cooperatively with ECI to develop survey questions that aid us in our advocacy efforts and help take the pulse of the vaping community.

Your participation in this survey will help inform regulators, advocates, and commentators as we all work to build policies that benefit consumers.”

Thank you!

Alex Clark
CEO, CASAA

If you didn’t know, Lunar Rover also sponsors Phil Busardo’s Taste Your Juice and Phil and Dimitris’s Smokers Show.

VapinGreek

Speaking of Dimitris, I’m proud to have been honored with the first annual VapinGreek Consumer Advocate Award during the Vape Expo in Las Vegas last week – and was taken by complete surprise when it was presented by one of the very people I admire.  (Thank you also to Bill Tarling for telling me to watch it – but not telling me why).

In the vast and varied world of what is the ‘vaping community’, inspiration can come from many. One person I’ve listened to is Dimi on various platforms of advocacy since early 2015. I found a voice within the United States with educated opinions, predictions and warnings of the what was going on in the industry, explaining to consumers (me) what was going ON. I found someone who was “calling out those who attempt to stifle the truth” of something I personally fight for. No holds barred. Affiliations and status don’t matter.

My sincerest thanks to Dimitris for recognizing me in such a way – and creating an award to honor consumers in the future just like me. I’ve met a few of you. There are a lot of us.

Thanks also to Mike Peterson of ‘Vaping and the Mic’ for capturing the video of Dimitris presenting this award here.

Juul – because Juul.

If I were still smoking and it were the first experience to try, it would have worked on throat hit alone. I also understand why Juul attained the lions share of and threaten the “cigalike” market.

Just because ‘you’ don’t like Juul doesn’t mean they don’t work. This is my friends’ son below. I’ve known him his whole life. By his choice, I gave him a Juul a few weeks ago. HIS unsolicited testimony is exactly what shops need to be attentive TO – the smoker trying to make an informed choice.

With Gottlieb’s announcement of “voluntary bans” comes an opportunity.

For brick and mortar shops, by restricting or not carrying consumer choices such as starter kits and only low nicotine strengths with high powered (and complicated to some – think of the help asked for in your groups) mods is restricting an adult consumer choice, pleasure, and possible transition to not smoking…

👉JUST like Gottlieb intends to do.

JUUL

2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey

All the rage, e-cigarette use “among teens” is up. No surprise. In fact, I predicted it last year. I’m not going to link what you probably already know. Instead, I’ll babble a bit. What did they NOT talk about?

E-cigarettes have cut youth smoking by a gazillion percent from 22.7% to 6.3% in 8 years. No one said a word about actual tobacco use… Yet. Still. These are the “things” they’ll need to backpedal on:

  • “E-cigarettes lead to – or are a ‘gateway’ to smoking” – incorrect.
  • “We just don’t know” – incorrect.
  • “They don’t work” – incorrect.
  • “Synar Amendment” – intact.

Of course it’s complicated. Smoking rates at historic lows seize future revenues of funding, grants, state & federal budgets, along with “free” patches, gums, lozenges, prescriptions…and so on. And bullying. Who will take over bullying of smokers? “Think of the children™”.

Remember the “gateway theories” with 3X’s or 5X’s or 7X’s “more likely to smoke” claims innundating your lives. None of these teens have succumbed to smoking? None have gone on crime sprees for patches and gums…

Here’s how I explained it directly to Tobacco-Free Kids.

In a tweet.

I crack me up.

Along with that, I’ll give you the numbers.

Youth "tobacco" rates

Nicotine and children

I’ve asked…. “How many children are addicted to patches and/or gums? I’ve asked  the American Academy of Pediatrics and their Presidendt for stats, data case studies (and possible arrest records). They didn’t answer me (!), but Joe Gitchell of Pinny Associates did.

There were “perhaps 2 adolescents may have been never smokers who used NRT”.

Use of nicotine replacement therapy among never smokers in the 1999-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys.

FDA: Full of intent, no purpose for smokers.

darts.JPG

Intents and purposes

The reason for intent (objective, goal) is to have desired results from an action.

The reason for which something is done is considered purpose.

For you who say “for all intensive purposes”, stop doing that. Although, in this instance (for your entertainment and mine), there may be are short-sighted “intensive” purposes for the head of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to act they way he does.

I’ll move on…

In another effort to have intent without purpose, Dr. Gottlieb of the FDA decided wait, was told no.. that’s not it, tweeted gleefully yesterday by following a tried and true tradition employed by politicians, “experts” & wanna-be a scientists by processing utilizing the “Think Of The Children™” script with some tweets. A favorite standby, deep with tradition used simply to manipulate public opinion.

Again.

I love and miss George Carlin. Eight seconds that will make your life more fulfilling:

The bigger the lie

Guilt. You know, the bigger the lie becomes, the harder it is to cover up.

It’s much more difficult to ignore. Gottlieb has been beaten into submission admission of the account of lower smoking rates among adults because OF e-cigarettes is obvious, yet subtle.

However, according to Dr. Gottlieb, even if kids are, according to the governments own numbers, smoking less because of e-cigarettes (they are), it is “still not an acceptable trade“.

First, allow me to point out Dr. Gottlieb “mentioned” science, almost as if it were being considered. He’s mentioned it in a different context here:

“FDA will always promote science based decision-making and seek the counsel of expert advisors”

On with the frovility extraordinary promise… of regulation.

Before you move on, allow me to point out e-cigarettesnicotine” is now defined as a “tobacco product“.

(Lowering nicotine in tobacco is another contrived “option“…)

He seems to “want” to preserve an “option”…. and may “believe”… sounds very sciency so far:

Then on the bottom…  no child… whoops… (laws) should ever (think of the children™) use a tobacco product. Still with me? Excellent.

That tweet did not go unnoticed.

MY statement.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again:

“If “children” are *already smoking, they’re *smokers* regardless of age.”

It’s fine to fail using 12-17 year old kids with already *known* dangerous drugs. “Think of the children™.”

Pfizer’s quit-smoking Chantix fails study in adolescent smokers

“You feed your baby nicotine in her mashed-up vegetables, and no corrupted medic has ever dared to claim this is a bad idea since nicotine is so closely associated with the B vitamin group….”

I’ll end this brief (for me) blog with sentiment from another one of mine from December:

Despite the illusion created from Dr. Gottlieb on down, (or up – from puppeteer in my opinion):

Kids sure don’t smoke like they used to.
