FDA launches “Every Try Counts” campaign to manipulate smokers

FDA launches “Every Try Counts” campaign

FDA launches their latest campaign to help smokers with an “adult smoking cessation education” campaign aimed at encouraging cigarette smokers to quit through messages of support called “Every Try Counts”. While the challenge will remain the same, their “tough love” approach of demonizing and shaming and nicotine guilt trips has turned into – well, a softer, kinder “positive” type of manipulation to say the same thing. Keep trying.

There seemed to be buzzwords like “stakeholders“, “medicinal” products, and “health” coupled with “technology” and “smoke-free society”. In the latest battle cry of “Every Try Counts“, there certainly seemed to be more grab-assery in the almost 2 1/2 hour Glantzian propaganda video than there was “effort” put forth by the FDA.

I did find e-cigarettes. The “e-cigarette” section of this campaign claiming “for now, we do not know” is difficult to find and treated like a red-headed stepchild on the naughty step (hat tip to Agent Ania who I adored and miss dearly), here.

What I know they know is in their possession all over this blog here, and here and so on.

“Every Try Counts”

In the latest smokescreen release:

“The FDA is committed to reducing tobacco-related disease and death by helping people quit combustible cigarettes and implementing comprehensive policies to reduce addiction to nicotine. Our aim is to render cigarettes minimally or non-addictive”

Stop. Do you know what a 10 Million+ Dollar commitment of comprehensive policies from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) return on investment might look like? I do.

*If any of you know of 10 million dollars being spent in a similar fashion for e-cigarettes, snus, etc., PLEASE link them in the comments.

fda conflict of interest.JPG

I couldn’t tell if this was a slip, or a tactically designed ploy by using the words “spectrum of risk” at 1:03:40 and 1:04:07 in the video….

According to “22nd Century” – “Spectrum” is the name of their product at this time)

bold is my emphasis within below:

MRTP designation

Perhaps the most immediate upside comes from the possibility of its very low nicotine cigarettes Brand A (containing 95% less nicotine compared to conventional cigarettes) to get the Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) designation.

The company would then be able to market Brand A as such, a very low nicotine cigarette which has less health risk as it reduces addiction.

An official application was made to the FDA in December last year, and a rather substantial meeting (involving no less than 22 FDA staff members and another 20 by telephone) took place within two weeks, suggesting substantial FDA interest.

This interest was already evident from the ($10M) financing by the FDA and NIDA of a landmark study using 22nd Century’s Spectrum research cigarettes that appeared in October 2015 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

This double blind, parallel, randomized clinical trials involving 840 smokers, found that smokers of Spectrum very low nicotine cigarettes consumed far fewer cigarettes per day and doubled their quit attempts versus smokers of cigarettes with conventional nicotine content.

“Every Try Counts”

Here’s the “landmark study”:

Randomized Trial of Reduced-Nicotine Standards for Cigarettes

How will the FDA get a return on investment with this campaign? They’re in the tobacco business. They’ll sell more cigarettes and collect the tax. I predicted it in advance here, and where “expert” personalities and political front groups are on board, I covered it here.

“while encouraging the development of potentially less harmful tobacco products for adults who still want or need access to nicotine.”

Well, thanks very much.

Continued babbling

The announcement rambles on, stating:

“At the same time, we’re also taking new steps to improve access and use of FDA-approved medicinal nicotine products to help smokers quit.”

The government and experts claim “government approved methods work to help smokers” but no one brags of 93% failure rates. No one mentions false hopes choosing those options. No one mentions the methods approved by the government, fanatically promoted and shoved into smokers faces, are designed to fail.

Imagine my surprise to see political front groups such as the Heart, Lung, Truth Initiative along with CVS “pledging” resources manipulation with the FDA.

The last campaign was a $200 million dollar flop.

Every Try Counts, right before your eyes

There’s a hashtag “#MedNicotine ” entangled in the manipulation.

What Duke-Margolis is quoting from Fred Saunders of Glaxo-Smith Kline (GSK) to smokers is:

Give us a call because you’re too stupid to understand we’re not going to make a product to help you, so call us: we’ll explain how you’ll fail. These products are useless without counseling. Give us money. Do as you’re told. Use them anyway.

Fundamentally.

Fund Us Mentality.

Added 12/14/17:

The day after this blog, this comes across my eyes:

“preclinical research conducted at Duke University”

Seems “#MedNicotine” was pretty serious….

Seems “Every Try  Counts” includes “medical nicotine”.

Axsom Therapeutics Collaborates with World-Leading Nicotine Addiction Research Center for Phase 2 Trial of AXS-05 in Smoking Cessation

The FDA can’t prove nicotine addiction or gateways exist.

Without tobacco/maio’s, Nicotine is not addictive.

When will the class action law suits begin?

One more thing. I primarily tweet and blog about e-cigs, but that does not mean I am against Heat not burn, snus, and so on. In my opinion, if you’re trying, it all counts.

I saw “dip” but Swedish Snus isn’t talked about enough, either.

Senator Todd Kaminsky claims: “Vaping nearly doubled”.

propaganda.jpg

Senator Todd Kaminsky, (D) NY Senate District 9 has concluded a “discussion” last night, proudly and ambiguously stating he

“… held an expert panel to discuss the dangers of this newfound trend” claiming “Vaping has nearly doubled since 2014“.

“DANGER IN DISGUISE” is on the banner in front of the “expert” panel.

With obvious facts in hand, there wouldn’t be presumptuous assertions or a need to corrupt the crowd (of eager parents) with preconceived or contrived notions from an expert panel.

If it has “doubled”, good. Less smoking among teens, what’s the problem?

If it has, please, show your work to the class, Senator.

I’ll assume since Senator Kaminsky is “a leader on ethics reform & corruption” (referred to here), there would be no need for me to assume there could be broad manipulation or ommission of facts in this discussion.

No, I assume credibility & fact-checking was of the highest priority before the discussion began.

Now, different than the normal rhetoric, he didn’t say it doubled with the normally ever-present words like “youth”, “children” or “kids” in his post(s), instead, for the sake of my own sanity, “Think of the children™”, I’ll describe it as implied.

Assumptions

My assumption is he and the expert panel “are” referring to “children”… if anyone has video or a transcript to the “discussion” or data used, please comment below.

For those that care, keep up and are watching:

What I still can find is still the latest from the National Institute on Drug Abuse” via the “Monitoring the Future (MTF) survey” from 2016 found here:

For a second year in a row, the MTF survey asked high school students about their use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes).

Significant decreases in use from last year were reported by:

8th (6.2 vs. 9.5 percent)

10th (10.3 vs. 14.0 percent)

12th graders (12.4 vs. 16.2 percent).

I can only assume this will lead to another attempt to promote what is “Tobacco 21” or youth smoking covered here and here and here and here.

What I cannot find is “vaping nearly doubled”. If anyone has it, please link it in the comments below so I can publicly

  • Apologize publicly and directly to Senator Kaminsky
  • Correct the numbers so I can pretend I’m an expert!

I’ve said this before.

I’ll repeat it: “If “children” are *already smoking, they’re *smokers regardless of age. Think of the children™.”

I predict, as others have, rates among “kids” will go up in the next few years. I’m not against that.

“When tobacco use decreases, less smoking occurs.”

What I do know is “nicotine” is now wrongly classified as “tobacco”.

What I also know, Senator, is New York has top billing with the long-standing Master Settlement Agreement Ponzi scheme.

Ask the expert!

I encourage you to voice your questions or concerns on these matters on his public Twitter and Facebook accounts.

“T21 has potential to increase use rates through psychological reactance, and out of protest once the targeted demographic realizes their right to choose has been removed.”

“They” want tobacco to be restricted to adults, they want to restrict adults from tobacco, and e-cigarettes.

Could Tobacco 21 increase smoking rates?

Smell that? Tobacco Control is imploding.

cigarette burning

Experts. They, and please correct me if I’m wrong, are in the care and custody of information about tobacco, a treasure trove of various tobacco company files, and of course, how to “prevent” control its said use.

Those who hold fancy titles like “mechanic” or “editor” use abuse their power and advantage leverage opinions to manipulate public perception of “everything” tobacco.

In reality, sitting around waiting for things to change, crumble or fall wouldn’t normally be my nature. I’m not sure about you, but I am enjoying a front row seat for the pending implosion of what is tobacco control from a consumer’s perspective.

Smell that? I think it’s already happening.

Beyond the blog fog, where it took 7 “experts” to stand together to whine about blogs, (much better than mine) was enjoyable. Watching them losing control over of all things, other opinions… was a sight to see.

There’s satisfaction in watching them desperately grasp at their own shallow standards.

Top Billing: Poor Stan

It seems tobacco control’s subliminal messages are fine, (try again, it takes time, plan to quit, we’re here to help, etc) but not ok for Hollywood.

Foiled again. He likes to stroke his beard while running around to various theaters finding smoking in movies so he can complain & talk about suing hollywood, claiming that “smoking in movies” leads to children smoking. May I offer you some popcorn?

Brad Rodu certainly can explain how he’s wrong better than I can.

Teen Smoking Unconnected to Cinematic Smoking

Harry Shapiro writes about it here as well:

Nicotine Science & Policy

Stanton Glantz, again…

Stanton Glantz “redoubles” (a term I see and despise, yet I’ll use it for the obvious – shouldn’t all efforts have been 100%, or have they been half-assed all along) his efforts in doublespeak and misdirection on everything tobacco and his grubby paws are losing a grip on reality.

Christopher Snowden covered that here.

“This is the David and Goliath delusion on crystal meth. “

That shady link between big tobacco and nicotine gum

Added 8/31/17:

Christopher Snowden appropriately checks Ruth Malone as well.

Get your story straight

Speaking of Alice:

Ruth Malone

Ruth certainly isn’t worthy of top billing, yet I do think of her just enough to break her balls in second place a bit as her indecision and world-famous non-commital stance is, well, I’m not sure – as I’ve shown here

It seems Ruth Malone has more to contribute to the misdirected link between big tobacco and descends into how evil they really are.

I’ll quote our dear friend, Agent, who on occasion would bring two words graciously into a tweet: “Quelle surprise”.

“It doesn’t seem to make sense for a company that sells cigarettes to help smokers stop using them”: A case study of Philip Morris’s involvement in smoking cessation

I fixed the final thoughts for her if you’d like to skip the formalities.

Gateways

The foundation of tobacco control are nicotine and gateways to smoking in youth.

Think of the children™” is a well worn battle-cry of the well established morons.

Well, they can collect their tobacco control toys, stop enticing their free child labor and go home.

More importantly, they can choose to ignore, or listen and engage with professionals like Dr. Cranfield below.

I’m still looking for addiction, in humans, to nicotine without tobacco control’s passive-aggressive proof by assertion. As nicotine “addiction” goes, I’ve covered, and continue to add to this blog specifically with my babbling, along with a ton of links within.

My Data Driven Meta-Analysis: E-cigarettes cause less smoking.

kid smoking

Imagine you’re a tobacco control “expert”, a professor, in fact. There is notoriety, fame even. You’re not a scientist, but while bumbling through your meta-analysis, you elude to being one for decades. Ahhh the life.

While walking upright, there’s a noticeable amount of doughnut powder in your beard (to show your expertise) in almost any sterile artificial setting — where everyone will nod their heads in agreement…

glantz tweet

Since I have the formalities out of the way, I will meta-analyse the chart below for before Professor Puff-N-Stuff gets his grubby paws on it.

I’ll submit my findings for all you math / data / science /statistitians for peer review below!

Aren’t you excited?

Submitted by Kevin Crowley, AKA @VapingIT, SPE, EEI.

(You have to have the fancy-shmancy initials!)

Title

(or whatever they put at the top of important studies)

E-cigarettes cause less smoking.

“Important stuff”:

E-cigarette use was tracked by the FDA & CDC – from 2011 – 2016.

It went up, peaked in 2015 and went back down.

Purpose:

I suppose I should explain myself like they all do, but I won’t, I’ll do it my way.

To have determination a deliberate (Thanks Fig!) and honest assessment of whether e-cigarettes cause more smoking (or not) in youth without using words like “may, might, could” or any phrases like “more studies will be needed to determine” (with or without nicotine).

This could be difficult, and I’m not an “expert” so I certainly hope you’re rooting for me.

More Stuff

Cigarette use in the same time frame – went down. (Check my math, this is important).

kids youth gateway

Findings:

Most children around adults not smoking has caused the children to not smoke. The adults choosing to use (e-cigarettes) vaping equipment instead of purchasing cigarettes, so the children can’t steal cigarettes from parents who are not smoking.

E-cigarettes cause less smoking in children, and adults.

(Being informative is exhausting!)

Result:

Since 2011, adults smoked less, making cigarettes less available to kids. 8% of children will still try cigarettes.

Links:

Chart above is here.

Study below the chart is here.

You can purchase my metanalysis for a billion dollars once I put it behind a paywall.

Conflicts Of Interest:

Like this matters, but I’ll play along. None, consumer.

Opinion

Big Ole’ long sentence assesment warning!

It is in my opinion that around 8 percent of the children in the United States are the core group of rebels who, despite any half-hearted efforts by tobacco control organizations or esteemed professors like Puff-N-Stuff, will try smoking, skip school and daredevil and adventure off into other activities deemed dangerous or delinquent-like.

Less than that will continue try cigars, hookah, pipes and smokeless tobacco.

It happens. That will give more time for experts (uninterested in blaming themselves or rebellion) to have something to do, like blame Hollywood for the remaining 8%.

I want to beat Professor Glantz to the metanalysis submission frenzy:

How’d I do?

Peer review my findings! Someone check my math!

Organizations & Politicians LIE about E-cigs. It’s a business decision.

tax1

In the never-ending onslaught of misleadings articles about vaping, this one,  by Maggie Fox  (Senior health writer @NBCNewshealth Science/Health/Tech)  was titled: “E-Cigarettes should be a last resort, heart doctors say“. There is clearly a discrepancy or three in this one. There are no mentions of any heart doctors in the article , instead the title guides the reader straight into the American Heart Association.  It is possible to assume crack staff  writer Maggie may not know the difference between heart doctors and the the AHA? A quick search doesn’t show Nancy Brown is a heart doctor. I could be wrong.

Please continue smoking:

According to the article, the  AHA, evidently, would prefer smokers to keep smoking  – and if you must, only try e-cigarettes as a last resort. CEO at the AHA, Nancy Brown states “the FDA should HURRY UP and regulate them”. We don’t want to dilly-dally  with regulations, do we?  Evidently the Heart Association’s intriguing “last resort” thing is a new POLICY. Those funds won’t just appear in the bank on their own, FDA. Hurry up. Toot-suite. Quick, like a bunny – before the public finds out what organizations and politicians are UP TO.

The comfort level must be almost unbearable with the film A Billion Lives due to be released shortly. Once it’s out, the lies will be exposed, and the public scrutiny of regulations will begin. Chop-chop, FDA. They can’t hold their lying breath forever!

Fox takes innuendo to the standard level, eluding to the usual wrong “children” stats (discrepancies are here & here ) while misinforming her readers. There’s the obligatory lie statement from Nancy Brown : “We are fiercely committed to preventing the tobacco industry from addicting another generation of smokers”.  Of course there’s the obligatory lie statement of vaping being a gateway, and nicotine being the root of all evil.

The link in the article – to the lies statement from the American Heart Association – is “not released” and unavailable. So, who are the doctors saying last resort? Brown was quoted in the article, stating “We fear that any additional delay of these new regulations will have real, continuing public health consequences”.

Yes, Nancy Brown, the business decisions you make health consequences are that the public will believe your lies and continue to smoke – since e-cigarettes will be treated the same in your world. Regulation in the form of taxes, is the goal. Remember when LESS smoking was the goal? Milk is not beef, syrup is not wood and nicotine is not tobacco. Deny it all you like, Research does exist, Nancy.

The Lung Association.

The Lung Association, headed by National President & CEO Harold Wimmer, has a business decision stance as well.  Out in California, my pal, Senator Mark Leno – after being defeated with SB140 last year, has revamped his effort to have e-cigarettes “accurately defined as tobacco products”. Olivia Gertz – the CEO of California’s chapter of the Lung Association is found here gloating stating she’s “proud to co-sponsor” legislative efforts with her business decision “to increase the state’s dismal national ranking in tobacco taxes“,  where they also mentioned the obligatory youth and health lie statements like above, yet taxes are the goal….

Bear with me as I’ll babble incessantly for your amusement:

Dismal ranking, Olivia? Embarrassed much? You’re worried about appearances? Is this a mirror check? LESS tobacco tax revenue = LESS smoking. That’s from all those vapers NOT smoking. Um, You’re WELCOME? Remember when organizations wanted us to NOT smoke?  Didn’t anyone plan properly for a drop in revenue from the “tobacco control efforts” over time taking the credit? SURPRISE. We’re doing YOUR job as well.

Now, as SFATA pointed out, former smokers  who use e-cigarettes – along with the tax in California – and believe me, this will be EVERYWHERE:

sfata.PNG

That’s not acceptable.

Sorry, didn’t mean to yell. Who’s in charge? Where is the evidence and science to arbitrarily make things up? WHERE are the leaders? Why aren’t more in “public health” acting like Jim? Who will be the last organization standing? They are lying. They are making business decisions. If they have their way, they both will be. The AHA and the ALA were once well respected organizations within America. They once put their efforts towards helping people stay healthy (and educated, supposedly) in the minds of millions. Now they’re choosing instead to lie recoup millions of dollars in revenue, a day, keeping their business decisions and lies motives at bay to the general public at any cost. Their business decisions are now costing lives.

These (many) organizations who are now placing themselves squarely in the middle of the ring, hell bent on convincing the public they are fighting the good fight on vaping. Their only goal is to L I E to keep pressure on public opinion with the ONLY goal of “regulating” e-cigarettes for the sole purpose of keeping themselves in BUSINESS with tax revenue.

Accountability cannot come soon enough.
