Good news: “treating cancer and preventing cancer” with combustible cigarettes

nedblog

Treating and preventing cancer.

Can you imagine the responsibility and privilege of announcing there is “good news for treating cancer and preventing cancer” by smoking combustible tobacco? Neither could I. This is what stupidity looks like, this is what “experts” will persuade the public to believe.

Dr. Norman E. Sharpless (bio) was sworn in as the 15th director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) on October 17, 2017. Among the items on display on his “I love me” wall, he holds medical degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is also an idiot.

Dr. Sharpless announced confidently arrogantly on Twitter on March 19th – that there was “good news” from sister organizations, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Note, he didn’t link a study, no research, not even a hint of proof in his statement. View his tweet and decide if it could easily be taken out of context.

Take your time.

“Two big announcements from sister Federal agencies over the weekend. on coverage for NGS and on nicotine levels in combustible tobacco. Both good news for treating cancer and preventing cancer.”

The theory

This is how proof by assertion starts, folks. Not only is “Both good news for treating cancer and preventing cancer”a blatent and misleading LIE, it’s – according to the government, impossible, unless they’re lying about that as well.

The theory is smokers using lower nicotine cigarettes will be less “addicted” with lower levels of nicotine – and (wibbleword alert) may, might, could, or potentially smoke less – or not at all, and allegedly, they then would, could, may, might or potentially reduce their risk of “X”.

My theory (please indulge me) is if they’re minimally or “non-addictive”… smokers (kids, youth, middle-aged, elderly) will smoke all they like.

After all, the government says they’re non or minimally addictive!

Now, with “prevent and cure cancer”… that’ll be so great for.. oh never mind.

Think of the propaganda™.

Public misperception that very low nicotine cigarettes are less carcinogenic

I asked Ned directly: “Are you clarifying the reduction in nicotine in the product(s) are also reducing other cancer causing chemicals?” (By other, I did not mean nicotine itself.) No response.

Either way, NICOTINE does not cause cancer. While I am not a “qualified expert” like Ned, I’ll safely assume (and correct me if I’m wrong) combustible tobacco in any form, including “very low nicotine” (VLN) probably can’t “cure” cancer. I was STUNNED a professional would say anything close to what I read, let alone tweet it. In writing. In public.

More Clarification

As of the date of this blog, I have received NO response. Wait, I take that back.

I also asked Cliff Douglas (bio), (“VP for Tobacco Control, American Cancer Society, and faculty, University of Michigan School of Public Health”) about the theory, because this isn’t something new… although a generation has passed, it has been tried before.

By linking this 1989 article, I asked Mr. Douglass directly “what exactly will be different” here, he proudly exclaimed confidently arrogantly, “Approximately everything“.

Beyond believable, I again asked for clarification on the levels of combustion, etc. and have not received a response.

Big surprise. I also KINDLY (I know, right?) asked Cliff to prove nicotine addiction here, where, if he was “able to provide documentation with my criteria” I would personally & publicly donate $50.00 to a charity of his choice.

I’m still waiting.

I’m a curious bastard

I’ve ASKED umpteen TIMES (sorry I yelled) about combustion to various useful idiots. Health benefits… you know, I point out silly things to officials as I have hereherehere.

I’ve asked Dr. Gottlieb of the FDA about how smoking more cigarettes with lower nicotine could… well, this is becoming silly. Either way, I had JUST asked Dr. Gottlieb just the day before.

I’m asking things THEY should be explaining:

Is combustion reduced? Will health benefits increase? Are other ingredients be reduced? Will this cause more casual smokers? Can you define “minimally” or “non-addictive”? Is this nothing more than prescribing smoking? What is being added to tobacco to reduce nicotine?

And over…

I am redundant. Repetitive. Repeating myself. Over & Over.

And asked… Stephanie Morain (Asst. Professor of Medical Ethics & Health Policy with Baylor College of Medicine) in May – since she tweeted the the importance of a “substantial” reduction in tobacco-related mortality.

Nobody likes answering my questions.

That’s not all……..

Ned, among others is not alone in miraculous claims…

Here’s another idiot. Former FDA Commissioner Robert Califf:

Who do these people work for? Who makes them accountable for irresponsible statements? Where are the requirements they are held accountable?

Now, if smoking combustible tobacco causes cancer, then how could…

Oh wait….. you could be stunned to know Dihydrogen Monoxide is dangerous.

This is a public health theme scheme continuing to boil.

I should listen to Carl V. Phillips:

“There are far more of them producing lies than there are honest experts to counter them…”

Tobacco Control Tactics: Elephants, Big Lies And The Nigerian Prince Scam

I respect and admire you, Carl, but I’m not shutting up.

YES.

U.S.A. ONLY:

I know we’re a community. I’ve participated in surveys worldwide. I conducted one myself. This one is United States participants only and designed specifically with F.D.A. guidelines.

Did you fill out the survey for flavors yet?

The usual suspects:

Tobacco Alternative Gums Market: Sales Volume, Revenue and Growth Rate Forecast

Huh.

Explaining the discontinuation of a non-tobacco nicotine project at Philip Morris: obstacles to innovation.

Imagine if you can, in 1994 there was something developed called a “Capillary Aerosol Generator” (CAG)… and guess what…

So, why was CAG development ultimately abandoned? During his deposition and witness statement, PM’s expert witness and former employee, Peter Lipowicz, mentions that technological barriers, consumer acceptance, and an US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approach that disadvantaged non-tobacco nicotine products were chiey responsible…
He says that CAG development was less attractive due to legal challenges about the addictiveness of nicotine and fears about overarching tobacco industry regulation, more so than regulatory barriers specic to non-tobacco cigarettes…

Explaining the discontinuation of a non-tobacco nicotine project at Philip Morris: obstacles to innovation

Nicotine “addiction”

Bear with me…. and my favorite subject…

Because of the tweet from “Industry Documents” showing Philip Morris had tried a device in 1994 containing this link about a “Capillary Aerosol Generator” (CAG) above…

What caught my eye in that article “He says that CAG development was less attractive due to legal challenges about the addictiveness of nicotine“….and that legal challenges of nicotine – of course -caught my attention… so I looked up “legal challenges nicotine 1994” on Google…  because I’m an inquisitive and persistant bastard…

Which led me to this from 2001, buried :

“The effects of nicotine on the brain are similar to those of sugar, salt, exercise, and other harmless substances and events”

“There are so many findings that conflict so starkly with the view that nicotine is addictive that it increasingly appears that adhering to the nicotine addiction thesis is only defensible on extra-scientific grounds.”

E-cigarettes and the obsolescence of combustion

“…substantial proportions of the population wrongly believe that e-cigarettes are as dangerous as combustible cigarettes…. Unfavorable press coverage, negative campaigns by e-cigarette opponents, and lack of training of health professionals may explain this situation.”

Topeka “Tobacco 21” Ordinance Turned Down by Judge

Adult choices are adult choices. I wonder why the “Tobacco 21” movement isn’t going state by state rather than each individual local city/town… 50 times rather than hundreds of times… publicity – public opinion – wasting valuable time for those opposed?

A #CrankyOldBroad whispered in my ear – if they get the towns, they can manipulate the states… and most – if not all – of these “Tobacco 21” moments are including e-cigarettes… take all the time you need with that…… Either way, Topeka said “NO“.

Reject Proposed 75% Tax on NJ Vapor Industry

Directly related:

Have you ever wondered WHY they wanted to classify nicotine as “tobacco”? Because smokers paid that tax, not tobacco companies. Now, not that I like smokers still paying tax, I DON’T. Not any more than liking people NOT smoking paying the tax.

However, because they can impose tobacco taxes on a NON-tobacco product like e-liquid…. (and tops, and batteries according to National Tobacco Day)

Nothing says #KeepSmokingWeNeedTheMoney, #PonziScheme and “return on investment” like bonds that “were based on assumptions that cigarette smoking declines would not exceed 4 percent annually.”

Californian Catastrophe

In the world of funny, this is sad, and this is funny. Not because I was one mentioned within –  because it shows the power of a headline and the lack of intelligence from anyone immediately involved taking it upon themselves to jump on the stupidity bandwagon… and this is why we can’t have nice things.

It is also why, when I as a consumer, do not understand something, I ask someone smarter than I am to explain it. Of course, that practice is evidently not a familiar thing to do among professionals….they just toss it out and… well, I’ve taken up way too much of your time:

Californian Catastrophe

Please, tell the FDA what you think.

Altria seeks state review of tax policy on new ‘reduced risk’ tobacco products

So, taxing “nicotine” because it is “deemedtobacco is to recoup taxes on losses of the government(s) from slowing sales of tobacco – and of course, they didn’t plan on cigarette sales dropping like they have, as a result of their irresponsible fiscal greed and inability to budget downward and out of existence, they deemed nicotine & e-cigs, components and parts AS tobacco so they can tax them and oh, I’m just babbling now — anywhooo….

Altria wants to reduce taxes on tobacco because it’s “reduced risk” tobacco. So, yeah.

This one made me laugh angry. In the conclusions from 2007 thru 2015:

“lack of specificity about the e-cigarette product under study”

“authors needed to conduct online searches to determine the product type”

“Consequently, the universe of grant proposals in our analysis could reflect a bias of the funding agencies’ priorities and not the investigative community.”

I could be wrong…

I. As in me. I could be wrong. It’s happened…. anyway… 22nd Century has been touted countless times by organized crime syndicates about how excited they are for “lowering nicotine” in cigarettes. The FDA has said it enough for me to become obsessed with the success or fate of this company. I don’t “care”, but have watched intently as the idiots think it could work for smokers wanting to quit… I thought it was a shoo in, at least for the FDA to keep saying it.

Joining Ranks

Finally – to wrap up Vaping In The News this week, the scream test continues… each time I see “prestigious” educational institutions denying funding… I get inquisitive…

Ellen J. MacKenzie, PhD, MSc, Dean of Bloomberg School of Public Health  – Johns Hopkins University joined ranks by choosing financing and funding of their research to continue with taxes from smoking as they released this joint statement.

Since the Master Settlement Agreement commenced in 1998, I can only conclude – according to the Johns Hopkins University website stating  “as a partner in a number of public health initiatives since its inception in 1998” that Dean MacKenzie (and the others signing) place funding via sales of tobacco via the MSA as ethical… but don’t trust themselves to do unbiased research despite the source of funding.

What We Know About E-Cigarettes: Data and Science Is Available

Are E-cigarettes Harmful

What We Know About E-Cigarettes

What We Know About E-cigarettes is clear. Data is easily found. Science is piling up. The Food and Drug Administration released their “Every Try Counts” campaign. I looked for the e-cigarette section on the link provided ~ because I’m a curious soul, and found the section “What We Know About E-Cigarettes”.

I’ve completed my meta-analysis and the data shows here that “Every Try Counts” only eludes to every try counting. The propaganda found on the website does not support e-cigarettes as a “try”. In fact, It looks like I may have found the “what we know about e-cigarettes” master draft journalists are using as a coloring contest fill in the blank exercise. By adding sentences, sprinkled opinions, various lies and fodder between the text and adding an ever catchy title with scary words for a click-bait title , ~voila~ they have a full article of “we just don’t know” here.

What should you know about e-cigarettes

If you are are a journalist. If you are a professional. If you are in any capacity in the medical field, feel free to reference my sentiments on the challenges of e-cigarettes public health experts face daily, here.
If you are a person with a prestigious title similar to “politician, front group liaison, expert, media contact”, etc.) and have an uncontrollable urge to look stupid, please, consider not doing that.
Science and data show e-cigs are a safer option and cessation rates are high according to available government research.

Below are my edits in bold, italics, etc, and with links below each paragraph to data and science.

Paragraph one:

E-cigarettes are officially known as electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). They are more commonly called e-cigarettes, e-cigs, e-hookah, or vapes. You may have seen ads or stories on the internet that say e-cigarettes are a safe safER choice to help smokers quit choose to switch from smoking. There isn’t enough is plenty of scientific evidence to say if this is true or not. Opinion alert: Here’s what doctors and researchers do know right now.

What we know about e-cigarette research

Research: Here, here and here. Oh, here, here, here and here. That should get you started.

Paragraph two:

We already know this: E-cigs work by heating a liquid that may or may not has have nicotine and other chemicals in it. Heating the liquid turns it into a vapor. That’s what the user inhales and exhales. Some research shows that this vapor includes chemicals that are known to be less harmful. Scientists are studying the health effects of using e-cigarettes. New information is coming in, but they don’t have the answers yet. but is being all but ignored.

What we know about withholding information:

There’s Withholding differential risk information. Information is available here, and “Lower Carcinogen Levels” here, scary science here, and “Harm reduction in COPD smokers who switch” here.

Paragraph three:
Although FDA is working to regulateregulating e-cigarettes to restrict, tax and ban these devices,no more innovation can be achieved, currently they are not regulated. That means the makers of e-cigs don’t have to say what is in them. There are ways to know is no way to know exactly what chemicals are in e-cigarettes, it’s called science or how much are in these products.

What we know about regulations

National Tobacco Day is covered here.

Paragraph four:

We do know that some, not all e-cigs contain nicotine. Nicotine is by proof of assertion, what you believe is addictive what makes tobacco addictive. Nicotine can (may, could, might) also affect how the brain develops. Because childhood and teen years are times of important brain development, the nicotine in tobacco and e-cigs is believed to be especially bad for children and teens.

What we know about nicotine

Nicotine is covered here, and here with “approved” methods, proof by assertion (the addiction to saying it is addictive) is covered here, and more nicotine is here, nicotine propaganda is covered in-depth here, and by me here.

Think of the children™ is covered in-depth, where there is no such thing as a gateway here, 10 years of smoking rates are plummeting for children here, described as weak here and covered here, and very interesting points of restrictions here… my fingers are tired, but I’ll press on because it’s important.

I’ve covered gateways and nicotine addiction, here.

Paragraph five:

It’s also not very clear if e-cigs do help people quit smoking or or if  and the government, public health, tobacco control experts purposely get in the way of people quitting. Researchers are working hard to find the answers to these important questions. For now, we do not know if using e-cigs is a safER and helpful way to quit smoking, so using e-cigs is not recommended. There are other proven, safe, and effective methods for quitting smoking.

Explore the options to find a quit method that’s right for you.

What we know about helpful

There’s that pesky National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) showing 79% success rate here.

Clarity on research misconduct happens to be here.

I can show you 7,238 answers to helpful here.

Science and data show e-cigs are a safer option and cessation rates are high according to available government research.

I typed slow, but you can bookmark this page and refer to it anytime, share it with your professional friends, and while you’re here, may I suggest if you’re writing an article or op-ed on e-cigarettes, try harder for information. Look to the left and right of this blog.

Repeat after me:

Science and data show e-cigs are a safer option and cessation rates are high according to available government research.

FDA launches “Every Try Counts” campaign to manipulate smokers

EveryTryCounts.jpg

FDA launches “Every Try Counts” campaign

Attention, smokers. The FDA launched their latest campaign to help smokers with an “adult smoking cessation education” campaign aimed at encouraging cigarette smokers to quit through messages of support called “Every Try Counts”. While the challenge will remain the same, their “tough love” approach of demonizing and shaming and nicotine guilt trips has turned into – well, a softer, kinder “positive” type of manipulation to say the same thing. Keep trying.

There seemed to be buzzwords like “stakeholders“, “medicinal” products, and “health” coupled with “technology” and “smoke-free society”. In the latest battle cry of “Every Try Counts“, there certainly seemed to be more grab-assery in the almost 2 1/2 hour Glantzian propaganda video than there was “effort” put forth by the FDA.

I did find e-cigarettes. The “e-cigarette” section of this campaign claiming “for now, we do not know” is difficult to find and treated like a red-headed stepchild on the naughty step (hat tip to Agent Ania who I adored and miss dearly), here.

What I know they know is in their possession all over this blog here, and here and so on.

“Every Try Counts”

In the latest smokescreen release:

“The FDA is committed to reducing tobacco-related disease and death by helping people quit combustible cigarettes and implementing comprehensive policies to reduce addiction to nicotine. Our aim is to render cigarettes minimally or non-addictive”

Stop. Do you know what a 10 Million+ Dollar commitment of comprehensive policies from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) return on investment might look like? I do.

*If any of you know of 10 million dollars being spent in a similar fashion for e-cigarettes, snus, etc., PLEASE link them in the comments.

fda conflict of interest.JPG

I couldn’t tell if this was a slip, or a tactically designed ploy by using the words “spectrum of risk” at 1:03:40 and 1:04:07 in the video….

According to “22nd Century” – “Spectrum” is the name of their product at this time)

bold is my emphasis within below:

MRTP designation

Perhaps the most immediate upside comes from the possibility of its very low nicotine cigarettes Brand A (containing 95% less nicotine compared to conventional cigarettes) to get the Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) designation.

The company would then be able to market Brand A as such, a very low nicotine cigarette which has less health risk as it reduces addiction.

An official application was made to the FDA in December last year, and a rather substantial meeting (involving no less than 22 FDA staff members and another 20 by telephone) took place within two weeks, suggesting substantial FDA interest.

This interest was already evident from the ($10M) financing by the FDA and NIDA of a landmark study using 22nd Century’s Spectrum research cigarettes that appeared in October 2015 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

This double blind, parallel, randomized clinical trials involving 840 smokers, found that smokers of Spectrum very low nicotine cigarettes consumed far fewer cigarettes per day and doubled their quit attempts versus smokers of cigarettes with conventional nicotine content.

“Every Try Counts”

Here’s the “landmark study”:

Randomized Trial of Reduced-Nicotine Standards for Cigarettes

How will the FDA get a return on investment with this campaign? They’re in the tobacco business. They’ll sell more cigarettes and collect the tax. I predicted it in advance here, and where “expert” personalities and political front groups are on board, I covered it here.

“while encouraging the development of potentially less harmful tobacco products for adults who still want or need access to nicotine.”

Well, thanks very much.

Continued babbling

The announcement rambles on, stating:

“At the same time, we’re also taking new steps to improve access and use of FDA-approved medicinal nicotine products to help smokers quit.”

The government and experts claim “government approved methods work to help smokers” but no one brags of 93% failure rates. No one mentions false hopes choosing those options. No one mentions the methods approved by the government, fanatically promoted and shoved into smokers faces, are designed to fail.

Imagine my surprise to see political front groups such as the Heart, Lung, Truth Initiative along with CVS “pledging” resources manipulation with the FDA.

The last campaign was a $200 million dollar flop.

Every Try Counts, right before your eyes

There’s a hashtag “#MedNicotine ” entangled in the manipulation.

What Duke-Margolis is quoting from Fred Saunders of Glaxo-Smith Kline (GSK) to smokers is:

Give us a call because you’re too stupid to understand we’re not going to make a product to help you, so call us: we’ll explain how you’ll fail. These products are useless without counseling. Give us money. Do as you’re told. Use them anyway.

Fundamentally.

Fund Us Mentality.

Added 12/14/17:

The day after this blog, this comes across my eyes:

“preclinical research conducted at Duke University”

Seems “#MedNicotine” was pretty serious….

Seems “Every Try  Counts” includes “medical nicotine”.

Axsom Therapeutics Collaborates with World-Leading Nicotine Addiction Research Center for Phase 2 Trial of AXS-05 in Smoking Cessation

The FDA can’t prove nicotine addiction or gateways exist.

Without tobacco/maio’s, Nicotine is not addictive.

When will the class action law suits begin?

One more thing. I primarily tweet and blog about e-cigs, but that does not mean I am against Heat not burn, snus, and so on. In my opinion, if you’re trying, it all counts.

I saw “dip” but Swedish Snus isn’t talked about enough, either.

Nannies: Butt OUT of nicotine, kratom use

gif bleeding

Nannies: Butt OUT of nicotine, kratom use

I must admit to having an “addiction to clickbaitable” articles on nicotine. In any given week, they seem to find me as if I had a dealer (Skip) who likes to bring them share them with me.

That said, another crossed my eye this morning and pissed me off.

So with that, here we are.

No bias here.

The “article” quoting an evidently “highly qualified” optometrist… an EYE doctor, titled “Butt in: Ask patients about nicotine use”.

It opens with

“A new study links the use of electronic cigarettes (vaping) among teenagers to more vaping and cigarette smoking”

In the first two paragraphs, the words “irritant” “risk” and “cause” accompany “teenagers” and “students”.

I left comments on the article (many won’t even allow comments any more) and at the moment, as usual, they are not showing up or deleted.

I didn’t see an author on that article. Enough of that idiotic twit or twits.

Kratom

I don’t normally sway from my chosen topic of e-cigs – but I will today.

While speaking recently about nicotine (use, “addiction”) to a relative (a licenced Arborist), I learned in about 20 minutes what I needed to “know” about kratom.

I’d never heard of kratom. I didn’t know it existed and know next to nothing about it.

Within that conversation, I looked kratom up. Imagine my surprise when I see testimonials eerily similar to what e-cigarette users are saying about nicotine.

Funding a nanny state

The government does not like consumer movements interrupting their war on nicotine. Examples of misconduct are here, another great explanation (thanks Ed!) is here.

The government does not like consumer movements interrupting their “war” on opioid addiction and “treatment”, so they are discouraging kratom use.

You can find out more about kratom here: americankratom.org.

Butt Out

I will believe one consumer as an “anecdote” before the pharmaceutical funded FDA says a word.

BUTT OUT of what you pretend you do not understand, you irritating twits. STOP twisting the drug company sponsored campaigns to discourage or erraticate what consumers know by disguising it with “regulations”.

I, for one, am tired of reading contrived “expert” opinions. I, for one, am tired of my government ignoring the consumer voice.

Here is one consumer I adore:

“If you see vaping consumer advocates constantly ranting on, it’s because we are trying to stop you lot fucking it up”.

That quote comes from this video below.

Please, get your favorite beverage and take the 20 minutes to listen to Sarah Jakes.

Simon Chapman: The E̶m̶p̶e̶r̶o̶r̶ ̶ Emeritus Wears No Clothes Down Under.

There comes a time where things need to be said. People in charge need to be pointed out. There have been things that no one, specifically Simon Chapman, wanted to talk about, like suggestions of law, regulations, and opinion to manipulate nicotine in this instance, but “don’t talk about it”.

Public health, is top secret stuff, evidently.

I would be irresponsible if I didn’t link Clive Bates covering the paper above here.

Less smoking in Australia comes with fines

The “discussion paper” (Note the other names in that) surely in part, brought this idiotic fine “penalty system” where posession of nicotine includes fines (and jail time) and cigarettes are legal:

Act Like An Expert

I’ve proudly called Simon Chapman a “chimpmanzee” among other obvious things here.

As an “expert” in tobacco control, it’s been pointed out by much smarter people than I am (in many instances) that Simon is wrong. You’d think, with his Ph.D. in social medicine that he would know better.

It isn’t the first time Mr. Chapman has been called out here, here & here.

Christopher Snowden could go on here.

chapman1.JPG

An assertion does not make you correct

This one is one of my favorite instances of assertion by Simon Chapman, and it still puzzles me as to why he would ever make such a rookie professional mistake.

Remember, this statement is from a tobacco control EXPERT influencing public HEALTH and tobacco control. I’d expect such a person to know everything there is to know about nicotine.

If you happen to be an “expert”, act like one. Make it a goal to know more than common people like me, or Judith below.

chapman nicotine.JPG

Even in his retirement, he wants to assert control.

Name calling and… well, who’s above that…

I’ve thought of calling Simon Chapman a “pretentious prick”. A “man-child”. I’ve thought “what an arrogant pompous ass”, yet I’ve only given time and effort where I thought it may be most appropriate. Like now.

It isn’t like Chapman would ever call anyone attempting to engage him properly,  (yes I did) trolls.

Let us clear the decks, call out the lies of those who have more power and funding than brains who are influencing idiotic policy with less than desireable required credentials and force them to answer the questions publicly.

I don’t want to waste any more of our time.

You can see Senator Leyonhjelm who has balls, discussing Simon Chapman below.

“…Department of Health was so taken aback by Simon Chapman’s false statements that they felt the need to go on the record and clear things up”

“Ill-informed, willfully ignorant and downright malicious”

“Snake oil salesman come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes they take the guise of an emeritus professor of sociology” ~ Senator Leyonhjelm

Don’t spread this around, Simon is talking about litigation.

Spell my name right, Simon.

As a footnote, the last time I wrote about my pal Simon, he graciously reviewed my inane drivel on Twitter. I aspire to do the same again. Seriously.
