Vaping In The News – March 5th – 11th, 2017

Cole-Bishop ~ Blog Fog ~ Dr Farsalinos ~ The Impact Of A Federal Cigarette Minimum Pack Price Policy ~ Simple Simon ~ Second Hand ~ Prohibition or Harm Reduction ~ HR1136 ~ Tobacco Associates hold 70th annual meeting in Wilson ~ Youth ~ Gary Wood ~ Tweet Of The Week ~ Vapers Tongue

Government, health organizations and special interest groups are counting on you to not pay attention. That’s the plan.

Don’t forget to set your clocks forward tomorrow. We get an hour less this week to fight the bastards.

Today the vapor industry joined together in support of Cole-Bishop.

  • Tony Abboud, Executive Director, Vapor Technology Association
  • Pamela Gorman, Executive Director, Smoke Free Alternatives Trade Association
  • Alex Clark, Executive Director, Consumer Advocates for Smoke-Free Alternatives Association
  • Gregory Conley, President, American Vaping Association

The Blog Fog Has Lifted

In what may be the longest “rapid response” ever, there are now responses:

Other responses

All were insightful, this one caught my eye from Clive Bates.

clive.JPG

TWO from Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos:

First:

Prevalence and correlates of current daily use of electronic cigarettes in the European Union: analysis of the 2014 Eurobarometer survey

Second:

Irresponsible marketing by parts of the e-cigarette industry requires immediate measures

Because Price-Reducing Strategies Are There:

I love the “conclusion”. They don’t like alternatives. They don’t like Snus. They don’t like e-cigarettes. They don’t like roll-your-own…..but they certainly like a “Federal Minimum Pack Price “idea”… we need a pay raise.

keepsmokingweneedthemoney2.png

“Conclusion: A federal minimum price policy has the potential to greatly benefit tobacco control and public health by uniformly increasing the price of cigarettes and by eliminating many price-reducing strategies currently available to both sellers and consumers.”

Remember, e-cigarettes are now “deemed” tobacco in the United States:

Simple Simon

I absolutely love Dick Puddlecoat. You should as well. Simon, not so much. If he’d only use the mass between his ears…

The ‘Rigour’ Of Simple Simon

 2nd hand

Because who doesn’t like the idea of anything second-hand?

“EC use releases negligible levels of nicotine into ambient air with no identified health risks to bystanders”

What does e-cigarette vapor contain? Is it harmless to bystanders?

A Survey (on Twitter) for my friends in Australia:

Cole-Bishop: #HR1136

Cole-Bishop, one of the more important things in the industry.

“The e-cigarette industry is on the edge of a cliff, with Food and Drug Administration rules threatening to wipe out 10,000 small businesses and remove 99 percent of vapor products from the market in just 18 months’ time.”

A modest reform could mean life or death for the vaping industry

Robert Innes.

I adore Mr. Innes:

A very high percentage of the population kept on smoking which concerned the ones who wanted them to stop, so the ones who wanted smokers to stop invented Nicotine Replacement Therapies (NRT) which gave the smokers nicotine which was not addictive, and did not provide any fun – that was good.

Prohibition or Harm Reduction

I almost couldn’t believe my eyes…

Not often do I do a double-take, but this one was refreshing to see.

gif eyes.gif

“we believe that patients have the right to practical, empirical, and accessible information and facts. We are hoping that e-cigarettes will be treated by the New York DOH with the same amount of empirical scrutiny and moral impartiality as these other means of harm reduction.”

Concerned healthcare providers respond to New York Department of Health Commissioner’s remarks on e-cigarettes

Tobacco Associates hold 70th annual meeting in Wilson

Here’s an interesting insight to the tobacco market and its own view on the upcoming years, and they don’t seem too concerned.

“Brown said the jury is still out on the e-cigarette industry’s impact on the U.S. combustibles market”

Strong profits predicted for tobacco growers

Youth:

I’ve often thought we should just ban children. Ankle-biting rugrats seem to have made some sense in this!

Avoiding or reducing the harm of tobacco cigarettes is the top reason youth vape, according to data from a survey by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and analyzed by PinneyAssociates.

Suicide or Vaping? – You Decide

Now I know drug companies have to list ‘possible’ side effects, however, when you see just what these so called ‘safe’ stop smoking drugs are capable of doing to the user – you’ll ask yourself just why they’re ‘approved’ and vaping is not.

Vaping In The News – February 19th-25th, 2017

This weeks collection of Vaping In The News includes Tobacco Control BMJ, Censorship, Steve Forbes, Refreshing Journalism, CASAA / HR1136, Bill Godshall, Cole-Bishop HR1136 Canada and Vlad The Vaper.

I won’t bore you with my usual (insert witty and thought-provoking editorial comment here) views on it all, so let us get straight to Vaping In The News:

Impugning

This week, much to my amusement, Tobacco Control BMJ finds itself in the hot seat when (it) wanted to assert take control. “They” decided to take some to task with this sad example of a scream test in their own echo chamber.

E-cigarettes: Smokers, knowledge is power.

blog1

Fear is a lack of knowledge. Knowledge is power. To find valuable information – credible information  – about vaping and e-cigarettes isn’t difficult. You have to know where to look, understand information as it is presented to you, and use it to make decisions for yourself.

To begin your journey, to expand your knowledge, you have places to go.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of personal blogs covering vaping in the research, legislative, political, scientific, and personal arena of e-cigarettes.

Sharing information about e-cigarettes is essential, and for some, a passion to educate others with accurate and forthright information.

One individual (listed) schooled me quickly and privately about nicotine. I was drinking the kool-aid up to that moment and he opened my eyes to the vast and valuable opportunity of learning.

Another individual listed fired me up so much to fight, I started my own blog.

You don’t always have to agree with individuals in “every” instance, but be open minded, take their vantage point and learn.

blog3

How we gain continuous knowledge about e-cigarettes, and what we need to learn via perspective from which it comes, holds weight. Not restrained with “deadlines”, angles or sponsors where there may be bias, individual consumers themselves have skill, direct impact and ability to communicate what needs to be said with vigor and style all their own.

Despite the vast claims “experts” manufacture, we, as individuals, are the experts.

This is an example of a journalist withholding knowledge and information  – from Sarah Knapton – Telegraph’s Science Editor.

It is yet another example of what we’re fighting against as individuals.

Personal bloggers

blog6

These few, for different reasons, have their admirable style and grace. You can find humor, be outraged and find a gold mine of truthful information. Consumers all over the world are looking for the bad about e-cigarettes – just as hard as the good – and tell it like it is.

You can be engrossed in the veracity and tenacity of their views and learn.

As an example of what is out there, there are many more doing things behind the scenes.

Everyone has a role in fighting – no matter what medium they use. The list of individuals and sites above is certainly not everyone. There are individuals writing and calling politicians, going to meetings. Starting websites. Educating their Doctors. Tweeting. Giving testimonies in court. Controlling tobacco roads – paved with g̶o̶o̶d̶ intentions

hell

Health officials, politicians and distinguished “experts” have, with all intents and purposes, descended into subliminal tobacco promotion – pro bono. Nice work! Despite fictitious and contrived positions against tobacco, they have consumed themselves by demonizing e-cigarettes.

The tobacco companies didn’t have to ask. The pharmaceutical companies sit quietly on standby. Healthcare organizations are dancing in the streets – still bleeding from loss of revenue. Government officials can barely contain themselves.

By design, tobacco control and anti-tobacco are promoting the consumption and continued use of cigarettes by both not saying a word and perpetuating fake news.

They’ve become the largest single advertiser – denying, downplaying, discouraging and ignoring facts to consumers about vaping products.

eyechart

If less tobacco use is the collective goal, they would have intervened and promoted the 79% success rate of e-cigarettes LONG ago. Instead, they violate the blind trust of the public by manipulation of facts with their opinions. They want revenue.

Nothing says “please keep smoking” like leading consumers to believe high profile doctors like Dr. Oz with his latest, or Dr. Margaret Quomo’s claim that “e-cigarettes will raise your risk for lung cancer but also other cancers, like liver cancer”.

Other delusions of grandeur like “nicotine is highly addictive”, “oral health“, formaldehyde-gate, Popcorn-lung-gate, particulate matters and the ever popular gateway-gate are still standard operating procedure to keep doubt and control of the intent of public perception.

These are professionals with standards?

Against All Odds, the U.S. Tobacco Industry Is Rolling in Money

Deny, Deny, Deny

This please keep smoking advertisement comes from Senator Markey saying the “e-cig industry should be put out of business“.

Please, think of the children.

Scare the public with your faux authority, Ed. That leaves the choice obvious for consumers, Ed. Ban the safer alternative, keep smoking as the intent – you can see how Massachusetts needs smokers for the money.

Who’s left behind?

See the smokers looking to switch in the rear view mirror?

To deviate from facts readily available to support a safer alternative to smoking is to act, with malice in promoting smoking and cigarette sales. Period.

Two recent examples of less harm:

New study comes the closest yet to proving that e-cigarettes aren’t as dangerous as smoking

The tragedy – since National Tobacco Day, nicotine is now “tobacco”, is that the public has to ACCEPT their definition of nicotine as tobacco, and in doing so, taxes will be, and already are, the norm. That is their intention.

In that, they get what they want either way, and the cost will be in line with – or higher than cigarettes. Think five years down the road. Legislators asking for the farm by passing insane tax measures – like in Pennsylvania.

They’ve done this before.

proof-by-assertion

We are obviously getting louder and harder to avoid.

The “Senate Co-Sponsorship Memoranda” introduced by Senator Camera Bartolotta does mention Public Health England and Royal College of Physicians.

Then – the guilty as charged get what they want (funding, balanced budgets) by appeasing – and “lowering the bar” while their intention is manipulating us into believing or having to accept the fact that consumers, smokers who may want to switch, are getting a “good deal”.

They’re not doing a very good job of trying to fight us.

Toxic Media. E-Cigarettes And Journalism.

nnnnn

Journalists. They spit out low quality fairy tales as fast as an e-cigarette study hits their untrained eye. Such articles give one an eye-opening glimpse into the many “amateur hour” hacks pretending to be “writers” there really are.

What a BUNCH of kumquats. I would be embarrassed to attach my name on  such a lack of “efforts” in “journalism” I’ve seen. I can only refer to the skill in which these articles were written as piss-poor. Most of these reek of the kind of stench you find in a port-a-john in a late summer fair full of experts.

With all the articles I see on e-cigarettes in a given week from the “press” and “reliable sources”, MOST are written as if they were made up by the half-assed skill of an 11 year old child. Still, after all this time e-cigarettes have been on the market, most journalists show very little fact checking skills and write about them with little to no knowledge of e-cigarettes.

The problem is, those who don’t know better…

may believe them.

These are irresponsible and unacceptable misinformation machines.

piss.jpg

Media today can barely put a comprehensive report out on e-cigarettes without sensationalism. They boldly publish and promote false statements and outright lies without apologies, without evidence, without integrity. There is evidently no pride lost in slinging their feces…

They squealed about “formaldehyde”, which was false, but very few put forth any effort to type about Public Health England?

news2

I am an amateur blogger. I’m not a professional writer, yet I put most of you to shame (both sides of this blog and previous posts for PLENTY of content) with proper information for a smoker contemplating e-cigarettes and what they need to know.

Sadly, I write better than most of you, and I’m not a writer by profession. Most of you proudly show lack of intelligence with each new “story”. See – that’s the thing, most of you are just telling stories. You’re specializing in e-cigarettes. E-cigarette fiction writers. Almost ass-hat like.

Am I being condescending? Yes, yes I am. Patronizing? Fine, if that’s how you feel. Some of you refer to e-cigarettes as smoking, so….we’re not on the same page. Work on that.

lies

Some reporters are obviously too stupid or unable to put two sentences together coherently, they string a reader along by almost always starting off by describing an e-cigarette. Most of it is “expert copy & paste skills” from what I see. Regurgitating the same thing over and over and over again…. each article seems to have a theme.

nnn

Requirements, evidently, for being a piss-poor journalist:

Mention gateways and children, but rarely mention “the children“.

Mention flavors, but rarely mention that “adults like flavors”.

Mention nicotine is addictive but never mention “nicotine“.

Mention approved methods, but don’t show “those methods aren’t as successful“.

Mention chemicals, but rarely mention “Chemicals“.

Mention health benefits, but never mention “health benefits

Mention we don’t know enough, but never mention that “Research is available here and here.”.

Mention laws, taxes & bans using the above descriptions but NEVER mention the truth on “Regulations, Restrictions, Taxes, Bans“.

Mention experts are on the fence about e-cigarettes, but have never talked to people on or  along “experts on this side of that fence“.

They almost NEVER mention reaching out to talk to ANY organization.

journalism

Research, in journalism  – or at least this type of journalism isn’t acceptable to the public.

They rarely retract a story, when they do it’s barely mentioned in unrelated news or withOUT fanfare like the original story was bled to death.

Almost incessantly they will either allow comments until they don’t like them, will not allow certain comments, will delete them all or not allow them to begin with.

They LOVE exploding batteries. Here’s Christopher Russell on that:

These wannabe’s take objectivity out, add in a five-gallon bucket of drivel, DON’T check facts, add in their own stupidity and use scary words like toxins – and makes a half-assed story go full ass.

One of the consequences of *#DailyPropaganda:

(*Thank you, Alan)

nn

dailypropaganda

According to Wikipedia-(a source evidently not concerned with standards in facts):

Journalism has developed a variety of ethics and standards. While objectivity and a lack of bias are of primary concern and importance, more liberal types of journalism, such as advocacy journalism and activism, intentionally adopt a non-objective viewpoint. This has become more prevalent with the advent of social media and blogs, as well as other platforms that are used to manipulate or sway social and political opinions and policies. These platforms often project extreme bias, as “sources” are not always held accountable or considered necessary in order to produce a written, televised or otherwise “published” end product.

Fergus Mason has his view of

Wikipedia, and why it matters.

 n

Please, keep in mind  -whether you are the largest major news corporation, or the smallest, I AM talking to YOU.

Do as you wish, “journalists”. Follow the pack, parasites. Keep going with  your “hard-hitting” fluff that your friends admire. You must be proud of that degree in typing.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

~Joseph Goebbels

There’s something controversial coming soon. It’s going to sting. This information you’re going to see in this trailer isn’t a secret. It may show that you are truly inept at research, that you are unwilling or unable to use your alleged education in journalism, or you’re just plain stupid. This could have been your story.

You, and all who have “Plausible Deniability” or who are “experts in tobacco control” might want to be attentive to this video from A Billion Lives.

Media used to relay the facts, today they only care about what sells. They have clearly taken a side before any interviews have started, some have affiliations with other companies or political views and stick to that no matter what truth is presented to them.

The honest truth should be shown on ALL media outlets, they should not be allowed to have a bias in any direction, the facts are what are important.

i find the media headlines negative aspects of vaping and e cigarettes way over the top.  The never ending saga of a biased media and their sheeple.
Saturday, Jul 25th 11:55AM

its unballanced and there is too much scaremungering going on from very ignorant people

Big tobacco money talks
Tuesday, Jul 21st 11:52AM

It is very confusing trying to figure out what is information from real studies or reliable sources as opposed to what is made up on a non fact based opinion. That goes for both positive and negative information. I have stopped reading anything because I don’t know what to trust is from an accurate source
Sunday, Jul 19th 10:45AM

It seems only the sensationalist, biased reports get the big headlines!
Sunday, Jul 19th 11:12AM

The media is attracted to negative stories.

From memory, there are 10 million smokers in the UK and 2.6M vapers. Of the vapers about 1M don’t dual use. I’m sure there’s plenty that don’t do either now. There needs to be a Panorama-type program to tell the good news truth about vaping and the money and power behind FDA and EU bans.

The propaganda is profoundly intellectually dishonest & scientifically incorrect.
Wednesday, Jul 15th 9:37AM

Most of what is out there is propoganda and when there is the side of vaping shown (pro vaping) it is far too often denounced. There are reports that show vaping honesty but they are few and far between because the govt does not want vaping to be seen as a good thing
Monday, Jul 13th 4:45PM

Junk science that is published them later pulled is stupid and irresponsable once it’s out there people believe it’s gotta be true when it isn’t
Monday, Jul 13th 2:11PM

There a a few unbiased reports out there, but most are fear-mongering.
Monday, Jul 13th 1:27PM

In the UK, I’ve seen both positive and negative coverage. But in the US it’s much worse, probably because of those vested interests. I do object to pharma companies putting signs in GPs offices saying ‘Don’t vape, stop smoking for good’ as it’s likely to put people off vaping. Vaping can save lives so why tell people not to do it? Insane.
Monday, Jul 13th 11:54AM

Heard some ridiculous stories. Battery safety is down to users, same as of you use a mobile phone, I have yet to meet anyone who has had anything more than a slight reaction to the pg. They simply used a Lewis worth more vg.

Monday, Jul 13th 3:30AM

Much of the media coverage (print and broadcast) reminds me of reports from the 80s and 90s suggesting that violent video games, television and rock music were responsible for teenagers committing serious crimes. Responsibility is being thrust on industry, rather than on parents, which is borderline atrocious

Sunday, Jul 12th 5:12PM

Very seldom do I see fair balanced reporting on the subject and when I see articles they are usually biased and slanted against Vaping and are chock full of misinformation and propaganda. The only fair and balanced information I have seen have been from the vaping industry itself.

Sunday, Jul 12th 2:33PM

This is true of a lot of the reports on the news, but I have seen lots of good studies done by professionals based on REAL SCIENCE and accurate reporting standards. I would never say vaping is 100% safe, but some of the reports on the news are just irresponsible and dissuade people from switching from stinkies, when they aren’t even true.

Sunday, Jul 12th 2:15PM

The real issue is the indoctrination the media has both received and repeated for the last 50 years from anti-smoking lobbies. It is because of this that all consumer nicotine products are demonized, regardless of potential benefit.

Saturday, Jul 11th 6:43PM

There have been both sides of reports on vaping, depends on who is making the statement in the perticular article, I’m sure there will be debates for quite some time, I could care less, I smoked about 40 years , now I vape, I think it was a smart choice for me, I’m not concerned about health issues cause it can’t be worse than smoking, either way I’m apparently not going to live for ever , I’m pretty smart, smart enough to try vaping and get off cigarettes.

Saturday, Jul 11th 2:57AM

The impact of what is reported is much more detrimental to those who don’t know any better or TRUST the media.

That’s why I’m here.

If I had relied on media reports for information I would have been too concerned with the long term safety of e-cigarette use to try them and I would still be smoking today.

From New York, this individual’s complete response to this survey is here.

“Popcorn” lung came up again in the news.

I suggest a tall glass of liquid to hydrate due to the high salt

The WONDERFUL folks over at Vapers.Org.UK

released a Special Edition on 12/12/15:

I suggest a tall glass of liquid to hydrate due to the high salt content!

A Bucket Of Popcorn.

The FDA has deeming regulations in progress at the moment.

Go here and do something about that.

Then go here as well.

Health Journalists. Ethics & Truth. Don’t Shoot The Messenger.

ethics2In the U.S. there’s Health Journalism conference…. I think it ends today….

On health. For people. Presumably on the health of people. That intrigues me. These people write about health. YOU are the messenger.

One can only presume your job is to give absolutely and without question, balanced and truthful information to your readers about facts on whatever subject of health  you’re writing on.

That’s pretty important. Someone looks to you for information. Pretty hefty responsibility if you ask me.

In my own “not so glamorous” day job, I service security systems. Pretty unimportant, until you consider ALL have life saving devices. Fire, Heat detection. Burglary. Medical pendants. Panic buttons. Holdup alarms. Other things integrated with the systems. Pretty important.

If I’m wrong, or make a poor decision or say, don’t do my job to the best of my ability, someone potentially could get hurt or die. I look at that as huge. I need to be right every time. No room for error or misleading calculations. I can’t just do “part of my job”. Lives are at stake.

I vape. I use an e-cig. I’m almost 2 years smoke-free. If you write about health, surely the idea of tobacco harm reduction has come across your keyboard at least once. Surely you’ve heard of vaping or at least an e-cigarette as a way to reduce or stop smoking.

Surely if you’re a “science/med “journo”, e-cigs have crossed your path. If not in the science side of your journalism with technology, certainly the subject has come up either with you or your readings along the lines of your health interests. Someone you know. No?

Good or bad, you’ve at least heard of e-cigs or vaping. Is that not a huge part of health? Smoking/quitting smoking? Ways… means… struggles…controversy in the e-cigarette world… ringing a bell? No? REALLY? Wow.  If you’re a journalist and you haven’t heard of this by now, you need to read more than you write to inform your readers.

Get out more. Talk to your professional friends. Responsibly. Professionally. With truth. If you don’t LIKE the truth, at least LINK the truth. That would just be a courtesy to the reader you are trying to inform. *Wink*.

enough

Here’s help towards the truth, it’s on almost every blog post I do:

ecigarette-research.org

A Link to WONDERFUL Professionals

who are able to talk/email with you about that truth at M.O.V.E.:

http://sciencecig.wordpress.com/

I’d expect in my 47 years that truth, not opinion,  in journalism, especially HEALTH journalism, would be a given.

Wait a minute… maybe not. Seems some “journalists” are like some in public health.

Lets meet a “science/med journo” person. I didn’t see a specific magazine or health e-zine, “science/med journo” is what is claimed.

j2sciencemed journo3

REMINDER: not tweeting my opinions.

j2sciencemed journo

The “YES” and the “THE” as they are capitalized, in my opinion, are opinion  – but for clarity, that’s just my opinion.

Maybe I’m taking this out of context?

It’s not a crime to be entertained or like popcorn.

Doing this blog entertains me.

Now I come to the trust part of my blog. trust

Imagine an older person, who may be afraid of asking questions to anyone, or not knowing anyone who vapes.

Maybe she’s tried every other method to quitting smoking there is known to man. Maybe she’s afraid to try e-cigarettes.

All she sees in the MEDIA is bad, or at least that is what she remembers.

Maybe she’s new to the online twitter world and unsure and only uninformed by default …finding out on twitter about e-cigs for the first time and learning on twitter with a random search. UGH.

Maybe, just maybe she sees misinformation and decides to keep smoking.

Meet this lady. She walked into a vape shop. (Thank you for that blog, Deb Iten!)

This is why ethics and truth is in question.

fight

So, you see, I fight for that lady.

The M.O.V.E. Organization represents the professional community who fights for that lady.

Other Twitter & Facebook members feverishly FIGHT for that lady.

Along with all the other babbling I do on twitter, facebook and here where

I did a survey of over 7,000 people WORLDWIDE…

Certainly, I am no journalist, but I am an advocate. I and many others watch for this very thing:

Misinformation.

Don’t take it personally. Take it personally. Doesn’t matter.

I distrust YOU because you claim “don’t know enough”,

Just like all the others.

If you don’t know what you’re supposed to “know” by now, after ecigs have had 10+ years on the market, you’re more idiotic than the posts I call you out on.

If you’re in the health field and you write about it without the truth, shame ON you.

To be informative, you must be informed. I learn something EVERY day about vaping. I DON’T know everything, but I’ll ask, read, question things and then read some more.

 UPDATE May 7th:

This journalist, Tara Haelle, released this on the recording of those tweets, to be fair I’ve included it here!

AHCJ15 Panel on E-Cigarettes/Vaping

I, and thousands like me, smarter than I am are advocating for a reason.

To HELP people, to give them the information. To help change LIVES if they choose to do so.

VapeMeStoopid does this VERY WELL, here.

If you’re claiming you’re a journalist and can’t do

15 minutes of research

to inform your readers,

Well… you’re not doing your frigging job.

I just hope one of us get to that lady before you do.
