Our friend, Dr, Gardner

With all the rhetoric since DECEMBER, In the “youth use” arena, this chart came up… with “never smoking” adolescents in the U.S.A..

They asked and separated daily use. Why are they still withholding pertinent information while basing an “epidemic” on incomplete and unreleased information?

Researchers Try Nicotine To Treat Memory Loss

More positive involvement using the word, (and the chemical) “nicotine”. This is good. This makes people who know better nervous. Excellent. More research I say! Think about it… if kids thought nicotine is good for you, they would avoid it like… oh never mind. I also secretly hope there is a use for those patches taking up shelf space.

Federal Communications Commission

Speaking of “The Children™”, ‘one’ Commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) wants to stop less harmful products being advertised because of no other reason: “even if they are targeted at kids”.

Meet Jessica Rosenworcel. Jessica is an “Impatient optimist. Mom, wife,” and of all things an “inveterate coffee drinker.” Huh.

The responses to her are in this link

Kristen Noll-Marsh has a question. (Click to enlarge).

Brendan Carr, also Commissioner at FCC, thinks otherwise.

Dr. Gardner has the answer for the children ™ :

No kidding. Already established abroad, The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has incorrectly defined…. oh never mind. I am grateful for the American Council on Science and Health taking this on.

Vape Radio

Vape Radio has had a fundraiser up for about a month. (I completely missed it!) In my opinion, Rod and his team are like this blog. They get the word out. They contribute to and talk about advocacy. They’re #LOUDER.

The Vaping Legion had him on here last week. If you are able to contribute, wonderful, If not, please share.

The Arrogance of Public Health Advocacy

Let’s see… covered misleading, covered the children™. How about some arrogance? Are you like what is described as the “average American” who is “resentful toward those who tell him or her how to live”? So am I.

This is an eye-opening perspective from a Doctor, in proper form:

Vaping Taxes in the United States and Around the World

There should be no tax imposed on a less harmful product. Period. I say NO more taxes on cigarettes OR vaping products, but they’re doing it anyway.

No stranger to my blog, Jim McDonald writes for Vaping 360, and is one I admire. He took on vaping taxes around the world:

As we slip into the third week of my one-man #SGWatch on Twitter, I took a harder look at what Dr. Adams says, and does, on his personal account – and what he doesn’t on his professional account as U.S. Surgeon General. Oh, and confusion. A general mess. That’s covered as well:

Dr. Gottlieb: E-cigs CAN Help Smokers Quit And Improve Their Health

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, Food and Drug Administration

Dr. Gottlieb of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) tweeted “e-cigs can help currently addicted adult smokers quit; and improve their health.” If you had internet connection issues yesterday, it may have been jolting shocks of horror from ‘experts’ seeing what he tweeted.

This isn’t the first reference to less harm, Dr. Gottlieb has passively stated in the past: “If you could take every adult smoker and fully switch them to e-cigarettes, that would have a substantial public health impact”. He’s also stated:

“E-cigarettes may present an important opportunity for adult smokers to transition off combustible tobacco products and onto nicotine delivery products that may not have the same level of risks associated with them.” (Source)

That’s pretty big news no one is hearing over the incessant chanting from others. If a “substantial public health impact” is a goal, Dr. Gottlieb will have to speak up. (I can barely hear him.) How about, oh – I don’t know, maybe a press conference with a mandatory presence of the alleged “health leaders” for a start.

Source

Dr. Gottlieb will have to speak up if a “substantial public health impact” is a goal:

In the four years (hard to believe, today) since the release of the results of my consumer survey, I have finally seen a credible and official statement saying “e-cigs can help currently addicted adult smokers quit; and improve their health.” from the Commissioner of the FDA.

This isn’t a secret. No one is listening. It’s something consumers have said all along.

Link

Not only did he tweet those words, he also tweeted a follow-up about improved health.

Link

I can’t be so arrogant to believe these tweets came from my urging, but I was shocked to read what Dr. Gottlieb said. Maybe he isn’t using his (this is funny) mute button! I’m skeptical, he’s at least tweeted it – with a comment about improving health. Twice. Vape shops are not permitted to say that. In my book, it’s better than a poke in the eye.

I can’t ask for… Wait, if the goal of reducing smoking is the goal, I’ll expect much more.

In my excitement, I mistakenly linked the Surgeon General from his personal account on a few nudges. However, I included him in other tweets in his “official” capacity. So far, no reference to this new study has been made from his personal or official account.

No “health group” has mentioned Alex Azar’s statement below. This information is NOT foreign to Dr. Adams or Dr. Gottlieb. They were present when U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Secretary Alex Azar spoke these words:

Quote is at 3:35 on this video

No surprise

Those ‘experts‘ I referred to above? The horror must’ve made them leave early to grab their favorite flavored Starbucks coffee. With Gottlieb making a statement like he did, I was eager to see if the American Heart, Lung, Cancer, or even Tobacco-Free Kids may, might, or could have mentioned it.

In conducting a quick general twitter search for the article link and found –ZERO– mentions from those organizations front groups. So much for a public health impact.

If smoking is “the single largest preventable cause of death and illness in the world”… and all “health” organizations are about health,  and improving health, then why does my pal DrMA below need to raise awareness of their omission a day after Gottlieb’s statement …

Picking Up Momentum

Tammy and others went all out:

Link

Our friend James Jarvis did as well.

Link

I’m in the middle

The headlines are wonderful, the truth is the average number of attempts for a smoker to stop is 30. The success rates of gums and patches are about 7%. The average success of e-cigarettes is 70% (low end), or more, and they know it, government funded research proves it. Downplaying it, giving it no attention isn’t informing the public. That doesn’t improve health.

Change The Conversation

It’s time for public health and politicians to make a decision:

They want less smoking, or they don’t.

They want less harm, or they don’t.”

CALL THEM OUT

If making public health a priority and “improving health” is their goal… With all we do know, EVERY single township, official, city, who have regulated, restricted or banned 18, 19, and 20-year-olds from less harm and choice should be questioned – having an opportunity to explain themselves.

EVERY news outlet should be screaming about improving health with e-cigarettes, and interviewing every single township, official, city, health group and expert in the area who restricted or banned those choices.

Consumers (like me) take it upon themselves to blog, tweet, write their representatives out of passion and conviction. If I’m doing it wrong, I’m willing to learn.

This just happened. At least that’s what I heard.
This is 2019. (“Hi, Fig”!)

These are the types of thing you may not be aware you, as a business, giving smokers a healthier option, are up against:

Original Tweet

Sometimes I pick my battles carefully.

Careen is responding to my “Vape Shop” photo. I imagine she’s being engaged with. Link.

It’s time for vape shops/industry to make a decision as well.

I know, love, and respect some business owners who are fighting by themselves for their customers, and future customers, either through a local or state industry organizations. If you’re not aware, you’re not doing yourselves any favors.

If you are in business giving smokers a healthier alternative to smoking and don’t change the conversation quickly with local, state and national lawmakers…… ahh, who am I to say what you should do. After all, it is your business.

I would read about this (here and here, or listen to this man and act accordingly with any representatives about youth, adult choices less harmful products, and more here:

You Don’t Know Nicotine

Award-Winning Filmmaker

Award-winning independent filmmaker Aaron Biebert is on the move again. He and his core team are ready to get to work on his new ground-breaking documentary, “You Don’t Know Nicotine”. In just four days, momentum is building quickly towards the first goal of funding this new film.

It isn’t a question, it is a statement.

“You Don’t Know Nicotine”.

On the Kickstarter page, Aaron asks:

  • How does nicotine actually affect developing brains?
  • Are there any benefits to adults who use nicotine without smoking?
  • Who’s covering up the truth about nicotine, and why?

Updated 1/30/2019: “Thanks to you, our project is currently the #1 most popular film project on Kickstarter!”

What they say

Varied statements of nicotine being as addictive as “heroin and cocaine” have been made for decades. They don’t just say it, they are assertive about it.

Action on Smoking and Health quotes Dr. Gottlieb stating it “rivals the addictive power of heroin and cocaine. For teens, it is particularly risky” and it “can rewire an adolescent’s brain“.

Action on Smoking and Health

The Centers for Disease Control say nicotine is a drug that “can harm brain development, memory, and attention“.

Cliff Douglas, “Vice-President Tobacco Control, American Cancer Society, and faculty, University of Michigan School of Public Health” states nicotine leads to changes in the brain.

The Surgeon General says nicotine is “highly addictive” and can “harm brain development“.

Ruth Malone

“The great enemy of truth is very often not the lie–deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth, persistent, persuasive and unrealistic…”

Are There Benefits? Are they right?

Think about it: is nicotine addictive? Is it dangerous? What are the health risks? Can it harm brain development? Are there benefits to the chemical?

What are they hiding?

Is there justification to what you’ve been told about nicotine or is the information outdated? Is what they say taken out of context? Do some of the people repeating it know it’s true or false?

“Too often we hold fast to the cliches of our forebears. We subject all facts to a prefabricated set of interpretations…”

Is there a controversy?

The subject matter of this film is intriguing to me. In March of 2017, and in collaboration with others, I conducted a “30-day Nicotine Challenge (with criteria: still uncontested).

What I expect from Aaron Biebart and his seasoned team is thought-provoking truth. I am looking foward to their findings, good or bad.

Why has this not been explored before?

Like his last award-winning independent film, I’m fascinated to see this subject taken head-on. I expect the public health community to line up (in an orderly fashion) to take unprecedented opportunity to explain themselves intelligently and end the debate publicly.

I also expect some to ignore it.

We enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought. ~John F. Kennedy

Searching for answers

While getting to the bottom of this, I expect – and predict – this director will enlighten us in the process, bringing this subject front and center, telling the world what we don’t know about nicotine.

I fully support this project because I understand the freedom of expression without outside influence. I understand educating the public is much less about ego and much more about education.

Regardless of the outcome, I look forward to the opportunity of discomfort of thought.

I’ll leave you with what the Kickstarter page says:

“We will chase down as many experts (willing & unwilling) as our budget allows. It’s time to get answers from all sides of this debate.”

If you’re interested, you can pitch in as little as $5.00 or much more, with levels and rewards being different, such as your name in the credits, an early streaming link, honoring a loved one who died from a smoking-related or brain-related illness, a public screening license, and much more – up to and including the “Tater Tot” level.

The Kickstarter campaign is here.

Hashtag #YouDontKnowNicotine

Follow this on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the website.

My sincerest hope is this film will Change The Conversation .

Nicotine and Vaping: Let’s Change The Conversation

Let’s Change The Conversation.

Let’s change the conversation about the myths surrounding nicotine and vaping.

The government resists ignores the opportunity to correct myths surrounding nicotine, vaping, and snus. Most things shared in mainstream media is full of multi-layered bias. There are difficulties explaining admitting vaping products and nicotine (and snus) are a safer, less harmful alternative to smoking, and the government continues to mislead the public.

Let’s change the conversation.

Myth:

Vaping does not work.

Truth:

Vaping does work.

Current nicotine cessation products show smoking cessation rates below 7% at 1 year.

Dr. Gottlieb knows the 93% failure rate is accurate.

However, what you’re not being told they won’t admit: Without question, e-cigarettes have shown extremely high success rates. A survey conducted by the Moffitt Cancer Center funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) showed as far back as 2013: 79% had completely quit smoking cigarettes

An immediate transition

42% quit switched in one day. 75% stopped smoking switched within a month in (my) global survey of 7,238 participants. While some ‘experts’ believe this is bias because vapers participated, this shows ‘real world’ beneficial bias. I found their experience similar to mine and wanted the world to know. So did they.

This more recent survey shows “real world” results as well..

Flavors: This United States survey, the largest survey ever performed on e-cigarette use in terms of sample size with 69,233, shows flavors was associated with significantly higher odds of adults having quit switched with vaping products and was submitted to the Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA has not published or utilized these findings to my knowledge.

“They want to regulate, restrict, tax and ban less smoking.”

Consider this:

Did you know “it may take 30 or more quit attempts before being successful” They DO.

I do.

Myth:

“We just don’t know enough”, there’s not enough research.

Truth:

There’s plenty of research.

There are over 200 pages of research found here.

56 more demonstrating vaping products are less harmful than cigarettes or are effective to switch can be found here.

Dr. Farsalinoshas been conducting laboratory and clinical research on e-cigarettes as a principal investigator since 2011” has his research found here.

Point To Ponder:

The FDA experimented with Chantix on 12-16-year-olds. “The study failed to meet the main goal”. You read that right. It’s here.

Fun Fact: They are encouraging more smoking.

According to this press release: “Agencies of the U.S. federal government have invested more than $100 million in independent clinical research with SPECTRUM cigarettes

Dr. Gottlieb, along with the majority of non-profit “health” organizations are excited to support more combustible cigarettes (with “lower nicotine“) entering the market.

There’s More:

This February 2018 article from Moffit Cancer Center, where Thomas H. Brandon, Moffit’s Director of Tobacco Research and Intervention Program is in the middle of “a large national study” and states “my perspective that e-cigarettes represent the most important change in the landscape of tobacco use during my 36 years in this field. We need to harness this change to maximize the public health benefit“.

Dr. Brandon acknowledges quitting takes “several serious attempts” and smokers should make use of the seven products approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and adds: “And yes, e-cigarettes, whatever works!” (Article.)

Let’s change the conversation.

It’s time for public health and politicians to

make a decision:

You want less smoking, or you don’t.

You want less harm, or you don’t.

Not the only one wanting to change the conversation with public perception, Dr. David Abrams of New York University agrees with Public Health England’s 2015 report.

According to this article, he knows vaping products are “substantially less harmful than cigarettes“.

Annual Reviews of Public Health

Again, changing the conversation is paramount to “reframe societal views of nicotine use” and stressed the need to “get out the latest accurate information about reduced harm”, along with the need for “ethics and integrity in responsibly interpreting the scientific evidence with rigor” is a necessity in this Annual Reviews of Public Health.

Consider this:

YOU are CASAA. The Consumer Advocates for Smoke-Free Alternatives has been changing the conversation since 2009. There are thousands of real-world testimonials here, and it is free to be a member and I encourage you to join here.

Tobacco Harm Reduction 4 Life (THR4Life) is another consumer group. THR4Life wants to change the conversation by supporting and educating consumers.

WHY are government officials withholding information on legal consumer nicotine/tobacco products from the public?

Myth:

E-liquid is a tobacco product

Truth:

As of August 8th, 2016, e-liquid (with or without nicotine) and vaping products are “deemed” (looked on, or to regard or consider in a specified way) tobacco products for the sole purpose of then regulating, restricting, taxing (like cigarettes) and even banning them.

Milk is not beef. Syrup is not wood. Grapes and hops are not alcohol. Almonds are not milk. Nicotine is not tobacco.

Sources for nicotine patches, gums, inhalers, and e-liquid all come from the same source. While some e-liquids do contain nicotine extracted from the tobacco plant, it can also be synthetic.

Exempt? Nicotine patches, gums, inhalers

It’s the same nicotine. “Nicotine can also be purchased in many other forms including patches, chewing gum, and liquid extract formula.” That’s here.

Are E-Cigarettes Tobacco Products?

Schrodinger’s Nicotine: Not Derived From Tobacco

American Cancer Society on vaping: Nicotine is not tobacco

DEFINITIONS matter:An almond doesn’t lactate, I will confess,” Dr. Gottlieb said. It doesn’t meet “standards of identity” in this article.

Definitions matter, evidently. Gottlieb says non-dairy products like “almond milk” and “soy” are not “milk”.

(Article reference, video reference)

Myth:

Vaping products and nicotine replacements like patches contain nicotine, I’m trading one addiction for another. Vaping is just like smoking.

Truth:

No. These products are different and the likelihood of addiction is very low.

While the nicotine itself is the same nicotine, these products deliver nicotine differently and have a much lower risk of addiction than cigarettes.

“To debate a comparison of e-cigarettes to combustible tobacco is gross negligence or voluntary incompetence.”

There are other chemicals in cigarettes, like ammonia, for enhancing nicotine delivery. There is much more to it.Research is showing that nicotine may not be the only ingredient in tobacco that affects its addictive potential” and “…likely caused by some as-yet-unidentified ingredient in tobacco smoke other than nicotine.”

You can see more about this hidden at the bottom of the page in purple from drugfacts.org here.

There’s More:

I understand your skepticism about nicotine. In fact, despite what you’ve heard since the 1988 Surgeon General’s report, there is no proof nicotine addiction exists.

This, from Hanan Frenk and Reuven Dar, says claiming nicotine addiction “could only be sustained by systematically ignoring all contradictory evidence” and “is remarkably biased and misleading.”.

That’s explained here:

If the data contradicts the theory, throw out the data.

It is also explained very well by Chris Price here:

Is Nicotine ‘Addictive’?

Still not convinced? I still understand your skepticism.

Consider this:

This is ground-breaking research on Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Paul Newhouse is director of Vanderbilt University’s Center for Cognitive Medicine.

“…and nobody started smoking cigarettes.”

“It seems very safe even in nonsmokers,” he said. “In our studies we find it actually reduces blood pressure chronically. And there were no addiction or withdrawal problems, and nobody started smoking cigarettes. The risk of addiction to nicotine alone is virtually nil.”

Study finds nicotine safe, helps in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s

And this:

The effects of nicotine itself are similar to that other popular drug, caffeine. There is no evidence that nicotine causes any substantial risk for cancer, and the research shows that the risk for cardiovascular disease is minimal. The confusion about nicotine comes from anti-smoking activists talking about nicotine and smoking as if they were the same.

This website also has information about smokeless tobacco including snus.

All about Nicotine (and Addiction)

Let’s change the conversation.

Consider this:

In Florida, Dr. Lee, faced with a five-year-old (at the time) experiencing “20 seizures a night” with a rare form of epilepsy decided to administer nicotine via a patch. Dr. Lee also “found evidence that a nicotine patch helped stopped seizures in an adult”.

Stunned? That’s here: Nicotine patch ends seizures for 5-year-old girl

No one has proven themselves right with criteria provided in my “Nicotine Addiction: An Open 30-Day Public Health Challenge“.

Myth:

There are no side effects from vaping products.

Truth:

An important point for someone considering vaping as an alternative, Vaping 360 has some astounding information on their website. One example is ‘The Potential Side Effects from Vaping“.

Also, some have experienced allergic reactions to propylene glycol.

Myth:

If I use vaping products, I will experience no withdrawal symptoms or cravings quitting smoking during my transition.

Truth:

Vaping products reduce withdrawal symptoms associated with cigarette smoking.

In fact, many (mentioned in the survey linked above) experienced little or no withdrawal symptoms during their transition. Nicotine strength is essential.

Let’s change the conversation in the next myth below.

Myth:

If I start vaping, nicotine strength should be reduced as soon as possible.

Truth:

You should not limit your nicotine strength.

During your transition, the strength of nicotine you choose mimics the throat hit you experienced while smoking. It’s your pleasure. If you decide to switch, it is recommended nicotine strength matches to make the transition easier. There are also nicotine calculators to estimate your nicotine strength.

As an example, if you smoke heavily, your nicotine strength should be 12, 16, 18, or 24mg. Strengths do go higher, (36, 54 and even as high as 72mg). If you are a light smoker, it may only be 0, 3, 6 or 9mg nicotine strength you would be satisfied with. Start higher, and over time you can lower your nicotine if you feel you should. Your local vape shop should be able to determine your needs.

Since myths of nicotine have been ingrained into the public and culture so long, finding this study showing higher nicotine strengths was intriguing.

Myth:

Nicotine causes cancer.

Truth:

Nicotine does NOT cause cancer.

There’s More:

World renowned cardiologist Dr. Farsalinos explains in this article: “Nicotine does not cause cancer“, he goes on to say “All medical experts around the world know this to be a true fact. And yet, many continue making the mistake of associating nicotine with cancer.”

Chris Price also explains it well here:

Nicotine And Cancer – Is There Any Link?

There’s MORE:

In fact, the Royal Society for Public Health DOES say “nicotine is no more harmful than caffeine”, here.

Myth:

Only healthy people can use Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), or nicotine.

Truth:

The effects of NRT and vaping products on the body is not “fully known”, but these products are safer than cigarettes. By using vaping products to switch from smoking, “you reduce your exposure to many chemicals found in tobacco smoke.”

In fact, 85% of the medical professionals in this survey said they are safer than combustible cigarettes.

If you have any concerns, talk to your doctor before doing so. Some find as patients, they are educating their doctors.

Under the direction of your doctor, most people can use NRT. Generally, NRT and vaping products can be safely used by people with diabetes or high blood pressure and does not increase the risk of heart attacks.

“Think of the children™.”

It is an appeal to emotion designed to create moral panic.

Myth:

E-cigarettes are “an epidemic among children”

Truth:

No, there is no “epidemic”. With bold being my emphasis, It may surprise you to see this via Clive Bates:

“Applying this proportion to the 2018 data would suggest about 4% of high school students are daily users (this compares to the headline 20.8% use in the past 30-days).”

That’s here: The great American youth vaping epidemic. Really?

Added 4/04/2019:

Some FDA Claims About Teen Vaping Confirmed, Others Evaporate

Points to ponder:

It is illegal to purchase these products for anyone under 18 21. (Trump amended the law in December of 2019).

That fact is on page 13 of the 499 page document found here.

Did you know?

Since 1992, retailers must “achieve a noncompliance rate of no more than 20%” selling tobacco to minors (80% is acceptable in accordance with the Synar Amendment)

That fact is here and is tied to funding: Synar Amendment

Myth:

E-cigarettes are “marketed to children”.

Truth:

This short video featuring Dr. Steven J. Allen from Capital Research explains:

It may also surprise you to see this:

“Anybody who tells you Juul is a panic or an epidemic in America is deceiving you”~ Iowa Attorney General ~ Tom Miller

Campaign For Tobacco-Free Kids Market E-cigarettes and Tobacco to Children.

Myth:

Only children like flavors.

Truth:

Surely you can answer for yourself if you like flavors (coffee, cake, cookies, candy, Grandma’s pies, etc.). While the myth of flavors being a ‘gateway‘ to smoking for teens (it is not), it is noted flavors like fruit and desserts, pastry and other flavors are extremely important in your transition.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is image-8.png

Myth:

E-cigarettes are a “gateway” to smoking.

Truth:

More truthful information across the board = less harm.

“If our primary concern is population-level trends in youth and young adult smoking, which we believe is appropriate, then vaping has not shown to be a serious cause for concern”.

That statement can be found here:

Examining the relationship of vaping to smoking initiation among US youth and young adults: a reality check

Also: Gateway effects and electronic cigarettes.

Myth:

There’s “anti-freeze” in e-cigarettes, and I’ve heard about “popcorn lung”.

Truth:

Blatantly lying, there is no “anti-freeze” in e-liquid. This statement is simply manipulative and absurd. As of the publishing of this post, the well respected American Academy of Pediatrics is still alluding to ‘anti-freeze’ as an ingredient in their ‘quick facts’ section here.

A twist of words on an ingredient, “facts” by various health groups and professionals. This article from Lee Johnson will ease your mind about this subject:

Propylene Glycol in E-Cigarettes – Is PG Dangerous to Inhale?

Popcorn lung is also false. From Dr Farsalinos, Brad Rodu, Dr. Siegel and more, a collection of evidence to the contrary:

A Bucket Full of Popcorn

Myth:

What about “second-hand” vapor?

Truth:

A valid concern. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health took that quite a bit further in a vape shop, where more than one person would be using these products.

“We evaluated concerns about exposure to vaping-related chemicals in a vape shop. Exposure to flavoring chemicals (diacetyl, 2,3-pentanedione, acetaldehyde), formaldehyde, nicotine, and propylene glycol were all below occupational exposure limits.”

That”s here: HHE Report No. 2015-0107-3279

Also see: “Results indicate e-cigarette secondhand exposures are sources of elevated nicotine and propylene glycol exposures. Secondhand exposures to e-cigarettes did not contain consistently elevated concentrations of formaldehyde or acetaldehyde.”
That’s here:

Air monitoring at large public electronic cigarette events.

And here from Clive Bates:

Public health snoopers detect vapour aerosol at vape conference and fake a particulates scare

If you’re interested:

There’s More:

Linda Bauld: “despite the lack of data of safety in pregnancy, we can be relatively confident that if the choice is between continued smoking and use of an e-cigarette (‘vaping’) then vaping is the safer option.”

Are e-cigarettes safe to use in pregnancy?

Linda Bauld: “the benefits of e-cigarettes for smokers have been shown to far outweigh the harms”

E-Cigarettes Could Help Control Weight Gain in Smokers Trying to Quit

Also, Dr. Robert L. Cranfield, MD:

“E-cigarette users with 3 or more years of use were found to have a 96% reduction in reported adverse health events after initiation use, and a resolution of 61.8% of the measured existing health problems that developed while smoking.”

A Comparison of Health Events in Previous Smokers With Three or more years of Electronic Cigarette Experience.

“You can smoke and vape. In fact, I encourage it.”

If you are a smoker choosing to switch to vaping products, do it for your own reasons. If you smoke and vape – just to try it, that’s called “dual use“.

Should vaping products be designated as a “medical device”? Swedish courts found: “the product must have the function of preventing or treating an ailment” and are not medical devices.

From my point of view, this is about proper information and choice.

Dr. Glover: “We need a new way to deal with smoking, and shaming current smokers into submission is NOT it…”

“They want to regulate, restrict, tax and ban less smoking.”

There’s More:

What about regulations? Well, Clive Bates answers some very important questions here:

Rethinking nicotine: FDA asks six questions about the future of nicotine regulation

Many more points here.

After everything you’ve learned so far, and before you go on, there’s a quiz (I love to hate to love) from Clive Bates:

Rethinking nicotine – a quiz

FDA’s Mitch Zeller, Director, Center for Tobacco Products knows vaping and snus doeswork:

Points to ponder

Nicotine “addiction” is blamed solely on “nicotine”. Why are teens not using patches and gums to hide their addiction?

At what age is a smoker considered a smoker?

Immature Manipulative Data

While smoking among teens has reached it’s lowest levels in history, The 2018 “Monitoring The Future” survey shows teens are using e-cigarettes at ‘epidemic’ levels at 26.7%, yet fails to show daily use (habitual).

Daily use was not asked. It did not have data showing:

  • What users were of legal age
  • What users did not use nicotine
  • How many were smoking and switched
  • Why marijuana is included with “any vaping
  • Why is “use” defined as in the past thirty days, not daily

Why?

Why would anyone in the government or public health field purposely mislead the public?

When #data collected fails to generate daily data to analysis and assess information, which bias is utilized best? Is it:

  • Area Bias?
  • Self-Selection Bias?
  • Leading Question Bias?
  • Social Desirability Bias?

How To Lie, Cheat, Manipulate and Mislead using Statistics and Graphical Displays.

Think about this very carfully:

“They want to regulate, restrict, tax and ban less smoking.”

The FDA position to limit access to adults is clear.

They’ve claimed e-cigarettes are a “gateway” to smoking.

Helen Redmond explains it eloquently here.

To put fear in the public mind, “brain damage” is also alluded to, but only found in animal studies, not humans.

Fun Fact: For the record, they want to eliminate 18, 19, and 20-year-old adults from accessing products by including vapor products with “Tobacco 21.

There’s more

They want to restrict access to cigarettes and e-cigarettes. For adults.

They already are well aware it doesn’t work. In fact, it makes no sense here. Creates more smoking, and didn’t make sense here. It also doesn’t make sense here.

The movement to raise the age to 21 for tobacco is not going to work. According to the Centers for Disease Control, underage drinking is still continuing to be a problem.

Switching and the Pleasure Principle

In the very important video below, fellow consumer David Dorn says in less than five minutes what most tobacco control experts never took the time to understand. He talks about switching and the pleasure principle.

It is highly recommended for smokers being pressured and families of smokers. This should be required for anyone in the professional crowd to listen to.

Ultimately, it is about choice and pleasure. David talks about switching. Pleasure. Choice.

From the Global Forum on Nicotine (GFN2016): The Pleasure Principle – David Dorn

Why?

Why would anyone in the government or public health field purposely and knowingly mislead the public?

Here are a few reasons in no particular order:

WHY are government officials withholding information on legal consumer nicotine/tobacco products from the public?

Let’s CHANGE The Conversation.

Along with e-cigarettes, I must point you to this important link from Dr. Brad Rodu about Mitch Zeller making false statements about smokeless tobacco needing to be part of the conversation as well. Dr. Rodu also talks about snus, and here where Mitch Zeller quietly answers Bengt Wiberg and absolutely admits snus is another alternative in the world, but no one hears that.

You can also learn more here on Facebook.

If the time, energy and money it took to convince the public otherwise been spent over the last ten+ years e-cigarettes have been available to educate, not manipulate, they may have achieved their goal of less smoking in the United States. I applaud the few who have stepped up despite the pressure of professional peers, and I encourage the others to do the same.

Medical, Research, Science Professionals: M.O.V.E.

On one hand, when if authorities, legislator and public health officials swallow their pride and see the need, en mass, to listen and to change the conversation completely, they will be very embarrassed.

On the other hand, changing the conversation, for most, isn’t their goal.

Let’s change the conversation about myths surrounding nicotine and vaping.

This blog was derived, in part, from a previous post featuring James Jarvis, and “Dispelling Myths about Nicotine Replacement Therapy”: Myths about Nicotine

HIGHER Nicotine Levels Are Safe

Quit smoking patch gum

HIGHER nicotine levels are SAFE.

A new study shows higher nicotine levels are safe – “nicotine on its own, outside of tobacco products, has limited addictive potential, and that higher doses are safe and well tolerated

As I typed the title of this blog, I could almost hear the thump of foreheads hitting desks of various alphabet soup groups, the heads of the FDA and other distinguished ‘experts’.

You know what? Good.

Thirty+ years of outright lies (or incompetence) need to stop.

“We’ve always done it this way”

If you’re in the business specifically of “helping smokers”, pay attention.

I’ve said this before. It is imperative: do not limit nicotine strength.

Now new research shows HIGHER levels of nicotine may help.

  • Of the 50 participants, 90 per cent progressed to at least three patches, while 72 per cent progressed to four patches.
  • 82 per cent of participants achieved four weeks validated abstinence from smoking, and experienced no significant increase in withdrawal symptoms, including urges to smoke.
  • Cigarette consumption, smoke intake and enjoyment of smoking declined significantly during the pre-quit period, and the intervention was rated as helpful and easy to adhere to.

I didn’t see this coming.

  1. Evidence then emerged that nicotine on its own, outside of tobacco products, has limited addictive potential
  2. higher doses are safe and well tolerated

Are you intrigued? I’m intrigued. You ponder that, dear reader, I’ll move along.

Now two questions!

  1. Will quitlines and tobacco control groups be able to say those two things above without hurting their lies and egos for the past 30 years?
  2. Will drug companies rush to make levels of nicotine higher to get back in the game and bring their success rates up?

On #1, I expect abruptly changing their standard nicotine statements – or changing public opinion – would not be difficult to do, but will be difficult to swallow. Face it, if they succeed doing what they’re designed to do – helping smokers quit, they will go out of ‘business’. They don’t want that.

On #2, Will drug companies begin offering increased nicotine levels/strengths in patches? I’ll bet they will. It makes good business sense. Not. Again, if they succeed doing what they’re designed to do – helping smokers quit, they will go out of ‘business’. They don’t want that.

Above, I typed the words “do not limit nicotine strength”. You’ve been taught scolded like a child about nicotine “addiction”.

Dependence, like caffeine? Possibly. I’ll almost accept dependence. I’m still on the fence.

Nicotine is not addictive.

Addiction? No. You can see my short answers here, the (much) longer version here, or take my challenge here.

The study went on to say “Our results also suggests that one of the reasons e-cigarettes are so much more popular and potentially more effective than other nicotine replacement treatments is that smokers can adjust their nicotine intake according to their needs.”

Here’s the link:

Trying to quit smoking? New research suggests higher levels of nicotine may help

Nicotine: It is not you, it is them.

How many times have you tried to stop smoking? Did you think to ask about success rates with the product you were using? Slick marketing, heavy support from ‘non-profit’ organizations of ineffective products having 93% failure rates make big companies donating big money to those non-profits richer.

It is not you. It is them.

It also gives a license to the “morally superior” ‘authority’ to blame you. Keep trying. Try harder. You can do it. You’re not trying hard enough.

They’re not trying hard enough.

Nicotine Failure Rates

While patches (and presumably gums, inhalers, etc.) are at certain strengths, we know they have very low (7%) success rates, and it takes an average of THIRTY tries for smokers trying to quit.

“Morals are standards set by those who want their standards met by others.”

Interesting, because the stigma wrongly associated with nicotine is addictive” and “bad”. Public health professionals have been instilling fear in soccer moms by demonizing nicotine for over 30 years- while beating smokers to death with hate and pointing fingers as if it were your fault.

“Convincing smokers that nicotine is addictive is a multi-billion dollar global lie.”

Things they don’t talk about in public. That’s the agenda. By actively concealing the truth (or doing as they’re told), they’ve lied about nicotine very effectively for a very long time.

Nicotine Experts Are Not Experts

According to this article from 2017, Philip Morris studied nicotine replacement therapies in the 90’s and found they were not hurting sales. No worries. This makes sense, and they were obviously right. Those are experts.

Tobacco control cult member Professor Glantz admits anti-smoking is 20 or 30 years behind the tobacco companies. In fact, self-proclaimed experts like Glantz have falsely recommended these products for years without a grasp on how they, or nicotine works.

“The assertion of nicotine “addiction” by “public health” is profitable and absurd.”

Glantz, while blaming lack of money “they have much more resources”, has had no problem (*wink*) taking money to promote (nicotine replacement therapy”) as proven (*wink*) to help smokers quit, (*wink*) adding that smokers need “regular counseling to use it properly” and displays ZERO expertise or integrity.

“Nicotine on its own, outside of tobacco products, has limited addictive potential, higher doses are safe and well tolerated”

Why do ineffective products continue to be promoted – giving smokers the false impression they work?

Because the hype and propaganda of nicotine ‘addiction’ without tobacco and MAOI’s, and ‘brain damage’ in teens, in humans, are unfounded.

Because there is no focus on helping smokers quit.  Because more money to help regulate tobacco products and to study the effects of new ‘tobacco’ products keep rolling in.

Think of the progress “anti-tobacco” could have made if they only applied themselves… and tried harder.

Is it on purpose?

Financial Ties and Conflicts of Interest Between Pharmaceutical and Tobacco Companies

3 case studies. One shows how tobacco companies pressured pharmaceutical companies to scale back their smoking cessation educational materials that accompanied Nicorette. The second shows how they restricted to whom the pharmaceutical company could market its transdermal nicotine patch. In the third case, we show how subsidiary tobacco and pharmaceutical companies of a parent company collaborated in the production of a nicotine-release gum. Thus, because tobacco cessation product marketing has been altered as a result of these financial conflicts, disclosure would serve the interest of public health.

“financial ties between tobacco and pharmaceutical companies have resulted in the weakening of smoking cessation efforts and the sharing of technology to develop nicotine products that are profitable to both industries.”

Vapers and shops.

I’ve said this before. It is imperative:

Do NOT limit nicotine strength.

With all that above, higher nicotine levels are safe. They are imperative. Think of the popularity (and ease) of Juul. Love them or hate them, they have high nicotine strength. My Grandmother would have adapted to those with ease. No filling, no fuss. Gram wouldn’t have joined Facebook groups to try to figure out ohms, watts, coils, builds.

Out of disgust, Gram would have tossed a blinking or non-working frustrating ‘best thing ever’ mod she paid $150.00 for in the trash the first time it wouldn’t have worked and lit her Pall Mall non-filter without hesitation. She’d have gone for cig-a-likes or ego style kits because nicotine strength and throat hit is that important.

Had I not started with 18mg (I’m still on it), and started on 3, 6, or 9mg nicotine – I might not be writing this blog, or maybe eventually I’d have picked up a *shudder* Juul.

“I know why the patch & gum didn’t work for me. I was afraid of becoming addicted to nicotine.”

Now, look around your shop – or if you’re not a shop owner, look around the shop you frequent. What is being offered? What is being sold? What nicotine strengths do you carry? Are there ‘old-school’ starter kits or cig-a-likes?

Are there strengths up to at least 18 or 24mg? Choice.

Preaching to the choir. Why didn’t they ask US?

If you’re using a high powered device and very low nicotine, theories and titrations have been discussed here by our friend Alan Beard:

In The End

As a consumer, I’m excited and commend this forward-thinking progress for nicotine patches. It is intriguing and solidifies my ‘do not limit nicotine strength‘ in a whole new light – even for me.

As I am of the ‘whatever works’ (and choice)  to reduce harms from smoking.

I also see this as the beginning of the fall of ivory towers of what is called “tobacco control“.

I’m not shutting up.

Vaping In The News – January 5th, 2019

Vaping In The News covers media stories on smoking, vaping, snus, heat not burn, e-cigarettes, exposing tobacco control, public health, government, regulations, policies and more worldwide.

“The largest threat to Public Health is an informed consumer.”

Managing nicotine ~ THR4Life ~ Self-determining nicotine consumption ~ I bought my dad a Juul  ~ Dr. Gottlieb ~ Poison Control ~ Surgeon General Jerome Adams ~ Voices Of Vapers ~ VapeTithing ~ FDA Comments

Managing nicotine without smoke to save lives now: Evidence for harm minimization

    • Products that do not burn tobacco are substantially less harmful than deadly smoke.
  • E-cigarettes do help smoker’s switch or quit smoking especially if used daily.
  • Youth use of e-cigarettes is experimental and not a gateway to lifetime smoking.

THR4Life

As a member of THR4Life, I, (and the Board of Directors) are excited to announce THR4Life was selected to receive a non-profit advertising campaign for the Detroit Lakes region from Leighton Broadcasting.

Because of the nomination, the national board will receive:

  • A client discovery session
  • Free production on up to 3 radio ads
  • A 13-week, 21 ads per week branding schedule on select Leighton Broadcasting radio stations.

Thank you to all those who voted and nominated THR4life, and thank you to Leighton Broadcasting!

Scott Gottlieb

A.J. is one of the people I follow on Twitter. Government officials are assumed to have a staffer manning their social media accounts. I – along with many others have tweeted at, to and above the “Dr. Gottlieb” account –  thousands of times. This, of all things, got a response from Gottlieb. While we know he now knows there’s a mute button, we’re not sure if he’s utilized it.

Finally a bit of levity from Dr. Gottlieb.

Poison Control

To be clear, the numbers below are *calls* to poison centers, not visits or treatment. Jake Jacobsen (@Jake2001 on Twitter) has been and continues to compile these each month.

“Here are the final numbers for 2018 from the U.S. American Association of Poison Control Centers. (AAPCC) Again, common household products continue to be much more prevalent.” – Jake

To my knowledge, no “epidemic” or crisis has been issued or discussed for laundry pods or hand sanitzer. Huh.

Poison 2018

Surgeon General

The Surgeon General has decided to take matters to his own personal twitter account to discuss e-cigarette use and ‘epidemic’ proportions of said use in youth. This seems to take a bit of heat of Dr. Gottlieb directly (on purpose?) – and of course, there is a disclaimer on the account: “Tweets/RT don’t represent endorsement or my employer.”

I, among others, have decided to take him to task. “Past month” use is not equal to “daily use” and therefore does not constitute any meaning of ‘epidemic’.

Alcohol is 30.20% for “past month” use. Quite high! On the surface, I would call that a huge concern.

The Surgeon General conveniently displays data. No one has uttered a word of an epidemic of alcohol use.

Daily use of alcohol is significantly lower, reported at 1.20%. That’s an extremely dramatic drop in what on the surface looks like a very high and concerning number for “use”.

The only conclusion is for me, they didn’t ask – or report it – on purpose. If it were truly and epidemic, certainly daily use would be the most intriguing and telling figure for what would be an “epidemic” and the most important question asked.

Author note: In or out of context, he’s sharing “national sentiment” and lack of balance.

His job description as Surgeon General is to provide “Americans with the best scientific information available on how to improve their health and reduce the risk of illness and injury.”

If you’re interested, you can also see what Dr. Adams has said in his non-representation of his employer about “feelings” and 30-day-use here.

Surgeon General Feelings

I call bullshit, Dr. Adams. Fraud, corruption and conflict comes to mind. Those are my feelings. I suppose that’s what feelings are for. Imagine my feelings when I found while in your role as Indiana State Health Commissioner – overseeing Indiana’s Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Commission – you owned (or still own?) stock in tobacco companies.

Huh.

Voices of Vapers

Speaking of A.J…. he’s joined Lindsey Stroud!

In this episode of Voices of Vapers, A.J. Moll, Executive Director of Missouri Smoke Free talks about his efforts in Missouri, his extensive research on tobacco harm reduction, and the recent Twitter antics from U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams.

FDA Comments

Your government at “work”.

The Food and Drug Administration is requesting comments for the “potential role of drug therapies to support youth e-cigarette cessation”.

Don’t let my editorial comments fool you, but remember, the standard and idiotic blanket statement of nicotine being “more addictive than heroin or cocaine” rings loudest in my ear.

This comment from you they seek, is for children. To have nicotine therapy.

These “therapies” below include “keep trying thirty times and experience 93% failure rates”. The last one has that pesky side effect of and includes suicidal thoughts.

They’ve lost their minds revenue. Need to build that back up.

  • Nicorette CQ
  • Habitrol
  • Nicotrol NS
  • Nicotrol Inhaler
  • Nicorette Lozenge
  • Nicorette Mini-lozenge
  • Zyban (buprofin)

The public hearing will be held on January 18, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The public hearing may be extended or may end early depending on the level of public participation. Persons seeking to present at the public hearing must register by January 8, 2019. Persons seeking to speak at the public hearing must register by January 15, 2019. Persons seeking to attend, but not present at, the public hearing must register by January 15, 2019. Section III provides attendance and registration information.

Electronic or written comments will be accepted after the public hearing until February 1, 2019.

Note: Because I’ve seen way to many negative entries in these in the past, my strong suggestion is for everyone to make their comment(s), and make them clear – and polite.

Vaping In The News – December 15th, 2018

news14

Vaping In The News covers media stories on smoking, vaping, snus, heat not burn, e-cigarettes, exposing tobacco control, public health, government, regulations, policies and more worldwide.

“The largest threat to Public Health is an informed consumer.”

Ex-Smokers Who Vape: Smoking Lapses and Relapse

“For those of us who listen to ex-smokers who now vape, this story is very familiar: “I quit by accident.” No other smoking cessation option elicits this response from ex-smokers.”

Ex-Smokers Who Vape: Smoking Lapses and Relapse

Open Access Farsalinos

This paragraph vividly explains the scream test from tobacco control experts:

A noticeable difference between vape research conducted by independent sources (and that from the tobacco industry) is that it tends to be accessible by everybody. The majority of papers produced by tobacco control are inevitably locked away behind a paywall, restricting public access and scrutiny.

He puts his spin on the article, I ask silly questions.

The Science of Vaping

Touted as “The science of vaping,”, NIDA’s Director Dr. Nora Volkow and tobacco expert Dr. Heather Kimmel join moderator Dr. Emily Einstein for a Facebook Live on what science tells us about vaping.

I suggest you take a nap instead of viewing this, as the script was predictable  – there was no expertise, and the science was absent.

It ended abruptly about 31 minutes in, but if you enjoy double-talk, bullshit and feel the need to punish yourself, it is here.

From surveys to videos, this week has been a long and interesting for e-cigarettes and other related news. I appreciate you and your attention to what I deem important and hope you share what you see as important in your circles.

EcigIntelligence Annual U.S. Consumer Survey 2018

It’s survey time for U.S. consumers. Challenges in the United States are far from over. Your voice counts. As a consumer, your data is both necessary and imperative.

Billions in anti-tobacco funds spent elsewhere

I’m still speechless concerning this pyramid / ponzi scheme placed upon smokers, then less smokers, while the public is conned into believing the tobacco companies pay tobacco control to do almost usless “work”.

20 years after settlement, billions in anti-tobacco funds spent elsewhere

Related: “Where We Stand” (see contrived)

(Bold, color, italics are my emphasis)

At 1:16:41 — “e-cigarettes and the like – thus far no pure vape product has been uh.. none of the parties have asserted they are in the MSA – the definition of a tobacco product (MSA) is different than a tobacco product under the FDA act…”

  • The Master Settlement Agreement is a contract
  • The Master Settlement Agreement does not expire.
  • Lock up funding by ballot measure/constitutional amendment if possible

I’m NOT going to stop asking this question: Can ‘nicotine’ (defined) as “tobacco” become a legal challenge?

If you’re interested, the full video “Where We Stand 20 Years After the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement: Legacy and Loose Ends” is here.

For about four years I’ve been told e-cigarettes – “even non-nicotine e-cigarettes” are a gateway TO smoking… This must be a coincidence.

Caught red-handed

Everyone should celebrate 20 years of failure.

Professor Glantz, shown with his hand in his pocket (not sure if that is him fondling Master Settlement Agreement funds, a court ordered gesture – or good idea).

Honor Among Thieves

The public is convinced tobacco companies pay for the the largest pyramid/ponzi scheme ever created. Smokers pay the ransom to demean themselves – to protect the tobacco companies.

“The major U.S. tobacco companies settled litigation with the states on November 23, 1998, in what is known as the Master Settlement Agreement, which requires the tobacco companies to pay out annually in perpetuity.”

Tobacco products promoted on Facebook despite policies

Since the 1970’s, there has been a ban on the advertising of tobacco. In 1970, President Nixon signed a law called the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act  – banning cigarette ads on T. V. and radio – beginning January 2nd of 1971. (Link). To get around it, media runs combustible tobacco images along side ‘anti-tobacco’ groups –  and has for years.

Side note: The US Government has been secretly recruiting underage smokers since 1992 at an acceptable “noncompliance rate of no more than 20%“.

On August 8, 2016, the United States legally defined and, on National Tobacco Day, “deemed” nicotine as tobacco. Without a doubt, advertising on social media of e-liquid is both self-promoted and promoted by consumers. The government, media and tobacco control continue to do both.

Because I like to tug on short hairs… I’m surprised the e-cigarette market is still legally able to advertise on social media (with the idiotic nicotine warning). While anarchy and mob rules may apply for some, I wonder – with legal definition – just how long advertising will be -ignored- (also federal tobacco taxes imposed) and how long it will take to try to knock it all down – if they could only do it without emotion.

I think the push has started.
