Harm Reduction: Cliff Notes

I’ve been searching for quite a few years for someone louder in the tobacco control and public health sectors, for a hero. Someone to correct easily repeated disinformation and outright lies. Someone with balls. Cliff Douglas notes harm reduction with precision.

In a surprising tweet, Cliff Douglas did just that. How? He released a document titled “It is Time to Act with Integrity and End the Internecine Warfare Over E-Cigarettes” in a tweet (here) on March 4th, 2021. It’s about damn time.

In dealing with e-cigarettes, he explains the tobacco control community is “letting down tens of millions of adult smokers, their families and friends”, along with “healthcare providers, and government decision-makers.”

He calls to “pursue rational, social justice-oriented approaches to tobacco harm reduction” and later states: This is clearly a social justice issue.”

opposition to even considering positive scientific findings related to the promise of vaping for cessation and harm reduction is widely reinforced by confirmation bias“…

Crafted with direct language to his colleagues, he’s quick pointing out valid concerns for vaping products not being ‘approved’ by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but states the issue is “factually separate from whether these products are in fact helping a significant number of adult users quit smoking“. That’s harm reduction.

Also discussed is the rise in cigarette sales due to a massive “negative coverage on e-cigarettes” and bans on “all flavors” in e-cigarettes because of youth use (<– that’s an important link), while ignoring adults wanting to choose safer alternatives.

Not mincing words on the 2019 “Evali” fiasco, he states: “To be clear, EVALI is caused by vitamin E acetate added to illicit THC vaping products“, adding his niece returned to smoking because of the misleading headlines.

“Stop skirting the truth when it feels inconvenient”

Is this statement from Cliff Douglas too late?

I certainly hope not. During the middle of a real health crisis – the covid pandemic, politicians are distracted by pushing for a vape mail ban to restrict access to adult consumers, and because of pubic opinion of a fake ‘epidemic‘, outright flavor bans are still being pushed to ban less smoking by politicians like Senator Mitt Romney and Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi for products children cannot legally obtain.

Blackballing – Blacklisting

With the leadership Cliff Douglas portrays, I hope to see others willing to have the courage to speak out. I say that because fear of being shunned – literally blackballed by their professional peers for explaining data, research, and science, is a thing.

I say again, blacklisting that’s a thing in the public health sector. I’ll let two examples from professionals – where they will turn, with vile contempt, on themselves…

In 2009, Dr Michael Siegel explained his experience of stepping out of line with the anti-smoking narrative:

“Importantly, only one perspective on this issue was presented to us in the trainings. There was no room for disagreement or challenge. These ideas were presented as scientific facts, not subject to debate. In fact, if we were to challenge the ideas, the implication was that we – ourselves – might be accused of working for Big Tobacco or receiving secret payoffs.”

Dr. Siegel’s statement is found here.

Highly respected public health warrior, Dr. Marewa Glover, (Centre of Research Excellence, Indigenous Sovereignty & Smoking) – knows all too well how vindictive the community can be. After decades dedicating her life, well respected experience, the damage already done, she was eventually given an apology (here).

She also gave Patrick and I keen insight to fundamentalist anti-tobacco stigmatization – cynical optimists I call them, who use deliberate behavioral methods – to ‘help’ and manipulate smokers with cognitive dissonance, projecting a ‘spoiled identity’, “barbarian whipping school” style – on Smoke Free Radio last year (here).

What about employees of big, bad tobacco companies? Do they get their say? Well, personally, as much scrutiny as they’re always under, (and public health isn’t), I trust them way more than you might think.

Thanks to Skip for the next two links:

Speaking of being under a microscope, Dr. Gilchrist, the head of Scientific and Public Communications for Philip Morris International… Her twitter says she’s an “Advocate for “better”. Science Lady” (who I admire and follow on Twitter):

I can think of countless times when others in the scientific community have been afraid to support us publicly – despite supporting our smoke-free vision and the evidence – because they feared for their reputation, job or funding if they were to do so.

Dr. Gilchrist’s quote is found here:
Speaking out when it’s not safe – for your reputation

Next, from Nicotine Policy, Neil McKeganey and Christopher Russell:

There is a real danger here of creating an academic environment in which allegation or suspicion has supplanted proof when it comes to scientific misconduct.

This quote can be found here:
Tobacco Industry Funded E-Cigarette Research and the Rise of Academic McCarthyism

Like most of my regular readers, I’ve searched for – and found – a few individuals in the public health and tobacco control sectors willing to stand up, unabashedly state facts, call out the preposterous junk science, and stop the manipulation of information about vaping products.

Then they’ve been ostracized. Who wins? Certainly those valuing their pride overrides the very public’s health they’re paid by and employed to, to “protect”.

Consumers need the truth

If less smoking “at any cost”, is the “end game”, and is their only goal, they’ve done a piss poor job of trying to convince me and millions of smokers and families looking for answer(s) buried in their constant attempts to be the “popular kid” on campus spewing contrived sociopolitical and pseudo “science”. That’s not harm reduction.

My hope is this powerful statement by Mr. Douglas encourages others in all facets of leadership roles in public health, to do the same. I’ve revised my statement: “I’m for whatever works for the informed consumer. Patch, gum, Heat Not Burn, vaping, snus, acupuncture, books, hypnosis, counseling, Hale, Juul, etc. Do I “like” them all? No. It’s not about or me, or what “I” like. What may work as a choice for a consumer is first.” That’s harm reduction.

I implore EVERYONE in public health to consider what Mr. Douglas asks in his tweet below. His paper is linked for your convenience just below his tweet.

Here’s Cliff’s Paper:

It is Time to Act with Integrity and End the Internecine Warfare Over E-Cigarettes

I’ll repeat myself: If less smoking, “at any cost”, is the “end game” and is their only goal, the words in the tweet below should be used at all times. “No neighbor left behind”. That’s harm reduction.

I’ll be covering You Don’t Know Nicotine again very soon.

I’ll paraphrase Skip Murray (I affectionately call her #CrankyOldBroad). None of this should be “us” against “them”. It shouldn’t be about who’s “winning”. It should be about helping one another. Period. That’s harm reduction.

Like my last blog, it’s a matter of public health, and it’s personal.

Let’s get to work, public health.

A Fading Old Memory Between My Wife And Me

1991

In a perfect world, this blog would never have been sitting in a draft folder waiting for the results of a diagnosis – and finding the right time to talk about it. In an imperfect world, this blog takes a frustrating journey on memory loss, my wife, and me.

I can only assume what Janice and I experienced has happened in a similar fashion to more than 6 million people. In the beginning, small incidents we brushed off were, hate the word, anecdotal.

Memory loss is typical, we’re told, as we age. Things like forgetting why she went into the room. “I must be getting old” style excuses.

Those were types of comments from her (and snarky comments from me, of course) on occasion. Laugh as we will, I reminded her – my dad called it “old-timers” disease… Not outright denial, but – Nah, couldn’t be.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is j1.jpg
1992

For background

Early in 2014, Janice worked in retail. She’d been “short” on her drawer, considerably over the $5.00 limit. Her boss -gave- her a week off while they “investigated” the shortage. While she knew there was no money “stolen”, the fact remained her till was not accurate. I wasn’t overly concerned but would find myself ultra-aware about my wife’s issues…

1992

Hey, wait a minute…

My son went with her to the grocery store she’d been going to for 15+ years. Not only did she pass the grocery store, she forgot where she was going. My son, intrigued by his mother’s forgetfulness, took great pride in telling the story. Again, one incident didn’t correlate with another, and it didn’t really – well, she’s not old enough to… Wait, brain issues??? Well, she’s too young to have a cognitive loss. Let’s press on.

In another instance, Janice took Dustin somewhere. It was mentioned she was had been “drifting” into the other lane – so much he grabbed the steering wheel to keep her in her own lane. She’d done it before. Now that’s not funny.

Suddenly, “little things” started adding up. Occasional frustration while using the microwave. She mentioned she couldn’t focus on traffic lights, looking at the one ahead rather than the one she was approaching. She’d find her chair behind her before she’d sit down…Seemingly ‘anecdotal’ things I (we) had brushed off – now deserved my dedicated attention.

Denial isn’t an objective option. Something’s going on. I (we) decided to stop her from driving. (I’ll get back to that.) We didn’t know – what we were looking for. Imaginations can and did run pretty wild…Parkinson’s? Brain tumor? Alzheimer’s?

So many questions

Fast-forwarding beyond the primary physician, a recurring question asked was “Has anything traumatic happened in [your] her life” or any “big changes”… Well, we’re pretty boring but had struggled in ways like anyone else over the years, nothing either of us considered traumatic in the sense they were looking for.

The best we could come up with was we had quit smoking about a year before… It’s at this point – I was trying to understand if it could be due to the absence of smoking (and all the chemicals) and the issue at hand. Was there a connection?

By 2015, appointments with a recommended neurologist brought multipe things – cat scans, blood tests, ultrasounds, thyroid, heart tests, electroencephalogram (EEG’s), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI’s), and led to eye tests (new glasses), ear/hearing tests, overnight monitors with cords strapped to her head to monitor brain waves (think Medusa!), and cognitive skills tests, were suddenly a partial list of our routine.

1999

Frustration

It is time-consuming, frustrating (and necessary) to figure out what is happening. Now, I’m not saying the first neurologist was behind the times, I’m just saying the equipment seemed antiquated – something that looked like it was from the 1970s.

He didn’t “find” anything, we had to keep making more appointments.

In the middle of 2015, we decided to get a second opinion to verify there was “nothing there” or found. Still, without an official diagnosis, she was prescribed Donepezil (Aricept) by her primary doctor, it immediately gave her vivid dreams and leg cramps.

I’ll be clear:

Donepezil is not a cure, and it states it does not cure Alzheimer’s disease, but it may improve memory, awareness, and the ability to function.

I’ll be more clear:

It also may NOT improve memory, awareness, and the ability to function, at least for my wife. Her symptoms remained – a lack of balance, depth perception, memory.

This is where I coined my phrase

Treating the symptom, not the cause – is never an effective outcome.”

2011

Being dismissed

Off to a second neurologist. There was, of course, further testing (mostly the same, because the 1st neurologist didn’t want to share records with the 2nd neurologist (((WHAT???))). By the time we could be ‘seen’, it was spring of 2016.

More of the same tests were conducted, which now also included an Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) examination for equilibrium – and a cardiologist. No unusual problems. Fast forward for time and space, this doctor said they couldn’t find anything physically wrong. Stay with me…

A recurring statement was ‘[you’re] “she’s too young” for Alzheimer’s. Janice was not in her 60’s – she had just hit her 50’s. For the vaping and smoking readers, I inquired on the 2nd visit with him about reducing nicotine and/or the possibility of her not smoking and symptoms appearing a year or so after quitting – if it were possible that…

I was abruptly interrupted with arrogance and superiority by a rehearsed condescending blowhard. I could tell… I was conversing on, and with, very thick-headed ice.

So, we were told (by two “professionals”) at this point: “She’s too young to have memory problems”. Based on her MRI’s brain scans – the second doctor emphasized he couldn’t see anything unusual or physically wrong with my wife, insinuating symptoms indicated a mental problem. The “problems” were “all in her head”. Still with me?

I’ll repeat that: They couldn’t find anything physically wrong with Janice, but of course – encouraged follow-up visits to see if her condition ‘changed’.

Wait, what? If you can’t find anything…why would I schedule…. never mind. I wonder why the medical community wonders why patients don’t trust their doctors.

My (and her) response was asking if the diagnosis was mental… Not in defense, but my natural reaction was, and I did, tell this second doctor – if I thought something was mentally wrong with her, I’d have said so and taken her to a psychiatrist. After 20 something years – I’d have noticed. But, I could be wrong.

On the diminishing trust of the “professional”, we halfheartedly took his advice and went to the psychiatrist, once. Just in case. I wasn’t ‘allowed’ in. This ‘professional’, in one visit, determined he wanted her on more medication, immediately.

We didn’t fill the prescription, we didn’t go back.

Towards the end of 2016, and distraught, we weren’t giving up, and decided on a third neurologist. Now, two have “found nothing“. Considering her age at the time of whatever this “is” started at about 50, two professionals said she was “too young to have memory problems“.

Well, not according to my accounts. Her symptoms were still a lack of balance, depth perception, memory.

One of the motor skills and problem-solving evaluation tests was re-ordered. I find this of interest because she hated the test, but we both really liked the doctor, a psychologist. He remembered us, understood our frustration, and he listened. He asked what I thought were pertinent questions. Professional inquiries, standard as with others. He also asked what it was I first noticed – to prompt us on our quest.

I thought about it after explaining a few things – forgetting to turn off the stove, the frustration of not remembering to pay a bill a couple times, driving incidents, all seemingly minor details but way out of Jan’s detailed character over the years…

One thing I thought was minor, piqued his interest. I explained we shared a computer and when I came home – the screen was always turned to one side and not straight. Kinda lopsided.

A light-bulb went off just above his head. He said it was very interesting about the depth perception…………..

Perception. Depth. Dementia… Huh. I was catching on.

With 2017 and 2018 having various tests, appointments, and guesses eliminated, we found she had diabetes. Medication takes care of controls diabetes. Also along the way, the third neurologist sent her to an eye specialist – where he found – and then did cataract surgery for her in both eyes.

Having multiple MRIs obtained, the third doctor instead, (and thoughtfully) ordered a positron emission tomography scan (PET) scan (not covered normally by insurance, and it should be). Note, dear reader, the other neurologists never mentioned a PET scan. Once ordered, it was approved after a 2nd try because a PET scan is not, we learned, an “approved” method for determinations…(?!?!?). MRI’s were also hard to approve years ago, and now PET scans are still considered “research”.

Once approved, The doctor assured us it would be definitive, and show (if any) any abnormalities. Meanwhile, another on-site standard memory test (taken a few times already) was performed at his office by a practitioner. He got the results, and it brought him quickly into the room where he exclaimed to Janice: “You’re no longer allowed to drive”… We explained she hadn’t driven since around 2014. (Told you I’d get back to that).

The PET scan was approved – and results in December of 2019 clearly showed abnormalities consistent with early onset Alzheimer’s. That was a definitive answer. They can’t pinpoint any specific ‘stage’, but is considered: Stage 3. The definition fluctuates between 2, 3 and hovers around 4 on occasion.

“There are drugs to treat the symptoms of early and mid-stage Alzheimer’s.”

“Currently there is no drug or treatment that prevents Alzheimer’s or related dementias.”

Knowing there is no cure, there are experimental drugs and studies that she can participate in, Janice decided to decline both.

Life is not without incidents, struggles, and frustrations. We were searching for, and finally found the cause of her issues. Steps for balancing diabetes, cataract surgeries, and other issues have seemed to make day-to-day life – better. I say ‘better’ with emphasis and reason. More than anything, it was a sense of relief to know. Had we dismissed these signs at the beginning, we’d be quite a few years behind for a diagnosis.

In fact, if we were just starting to notice (and possibly ignoring) things, the behavior pattern today would make me think – something might be wrong with her. Now, after more than 29 years, there are very good days, and on occasion, not so good days. In my mind, we’re about 5-7 years ahead of the curve.

Final thoughts

2018

We are relieved knowing what it is, but not relieved by what it is. What is sad is three professionals inappropriately predetermined an answer, gaslighted, stigmatized, and embarrassed my wife, then left us to search for an answer for what seemed like an eternity.

This has been a long journey from the questionable – subtle – and not so subtle – symptoms, questions, appointments, fear, testing, analysis, discovery, and diagnosis.

Jan & our Grandson

In an imperfect world, there are things we cannot control. In a perfect world, you must live your life making decisions that control what is best for you and your loved ones.

It isn’t the end. While the future may be challenging, this has been a 29+ year path of old memories – between my wife and me.

WE, The People

October 1st, Columbus, Ohio Statehouse rally.

Consumers: WE, the people.

That’s YOU.

Over the past few years I’ve seen and heard variations of “we should go to Washington and hold a rally.” Well, dear fellow consumer we, the people, it is beyond time. Suddenly, when President Trump tweeted about vaping, we are IN the national spotlight.

Now is the time for we, the people to come together in one voice – and make our presence known in our nation’s capital. Millions have bravely gone before us, now it is our turn.

“Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”.

What does that mean to we, the people? As long as you’re of legal age, smoke if you like. Or don’t. To me, it means freedom of choice of a less harmful alternative to smoking.. and that includes flavors.

Boston Tea Party

I’m confident American small business owners and consumers alike are familiar with the history that helped frame the foundation of the United States.

Enraged by control, taxation, tyranny, and demanding freedom – the Sons of Liberty (merchants/small business owners) decided, defiantly, to throw themselves a tea party in the Boston Harbor. They became #louder.

Before this, boycotts and smuggling – black market – tea was prominent.

Now replace the word tea – with cigarettes. Next, replace the words “No taxation without representation” with “lessharmfulproducts“.

This is our “Boston Tea Party”.

Despite efforts to circumvent the movement we, the people, vaping products are removing cigarette tax revenue from the government. That’s what small businesses and consumers we, the people, are doing. This is our “Boston Tea Party”.

Who

No photo description available.

The United Vapers Alliance (UVA) was formed as a 501(c)(4) organization earlier this year. The sole intent is to educate the public and politicians regarding the benefits of harm reduction via vapor products, and the right to keep flavors on the market as a consumer choice.

Why:

Because the government is WRONG. Our messaging needs to be clear, simple, peaceful, and united. Consumers, we the people’s rights are being infringed, restricted, and may possibly be extinguished by government actions and policy all over the nation. The time for silence is over. The time to be heard is NOW.  For too long, we have waited for our politicians to do the right thing.  No more.

“So whether or not we choose to believe the FDA’s stated intent to entertain the re-introduction of flavored vapes at a later date, this is, at least, a de facto permanent prohibition for smaller operators.” Source

THOUSANDS of citizens like Susan Ripley (below), have created small businesses, creating jobs by investing in this life-changing technology. Now they are fighting for their rights – along with ours.

How:

United Vapers Alliance will LOUDLY inform Congress and the FDA, that if they do NOTHING, 99% of all vape products will be removed from the market by May, 2020.  United Vapers Alliance will fight for the right to live a less harmful lifestyle and see OUR children grow.

We are an estimated thirteen+ (13+) million strong, with families and friends who have seen the positive change that vapor products have provided.  If our politicians will not listen to our voices we, the people, then our voices will be heard at the ballot box this 2020 election.

Together, consumers will rally with ONE voice, ONE mission, ONE message, and will shake the very foundations of power in Washington D.C..

This Washington, D.C. voyage has the same importance for me personally as my trip to Milwaukee did. This is history in the making. Monumental. I want to stand beside you, the people, with some of the loudest voices representing our country, and to be heard. To change the conversation.

This country was founded on we, the people. Someone was standing up for your rights, the rights of others, and those generations who will follow. This country was founded on #louder voices. This is no different. I consider myself one who speaks for many. I hope to see you there, and don’t be shy. I’ll be the 6′ redhead looking forward to standing beside you and shaking your hand.

This video gives me hope that critical thinking may still be lurking in the United States.

With Dr. Sally Satel, Dr. Roger Klein, and Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller.

Speaking of needing “treatment”.

Surprise! Pfizer sponsored research has found they need to fill a need because you need their product as “treatment” to cease vaping product use.

This gem is in the text. Bold and italics are my emphasis.

There aren’t antismoking treatments for people who smoke only electronic cigarette (single users) or electronic cigarette and classic cigarette (dual users). Surprisingly, there aren’t data available in the literature on smoking cessation intervention for this specific disease group …

For posterity

In the spirit of having a record of informing readers now, and years to come, I will point out the wording is impeccable for propaganda, and the press was asking great questions. However, I will link the CDC transcript, and their inability to have any tangible findings, here

Michigan Governor Declares Cigarettes Safe

I understand the cringing. There were a few uneasy about this (my) blog because the Governor of Michigan didn’t actually say or “declare” cigarettes are safe.

Now, think of the never-ending, non-stop, click-bait (three hyphenated words in a row is a record for me) articles you see, read, get tagged by your friends, and millions share daily. That are not true.

Nope, she didn’t ‘say’ or ‘declare’ cigarettes are safe, but it was implied. Call it tongue-in-cheek, call it satire.

She isn’t banning cigarettes, therefore, cigarettes are safe.

Michigan Governor Declares Cigarettes Safe

Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan has arrogantly declared cigarettes are safe and will remain available for consumers of all ages in her state. “Alternative nicotine products” will be banned to protect the children ™.

It seems the words “regulate, restrict, tax and ban” will not catch on (in that order) as I had envisioned. Michigan, like San Francisco, has chosen the word “ban” for less harmful products to protect the children™ … I’m happy to report however, cigarettes are safe.

They aren’t banning all vaping products in Michigan, only “alternative nicotine products”. At last check (pretend I made a phone call here), cigarettes are safe from being banned in the state. To protect the children ™ .

Any normal human being would think laws are in place to protect the children ™ restrict underage purchase of booze, cigarettes, and other adult products. Don’t all laugh in unison.

Dr. Brad Rodu already explained underage sales of tobacco is poorly enforced and violation rates are “extremely high” in states like Michigan earlier this year.

(For reference on federal/state enforcement of underage sales, see what no one likes to talk about: Synar Amendment).

The Governor posted this… To protect the children ™.

Takeaways:

A less harmful CONSUMER choice is being eliminated. Without experience, consumers (of any age) may try to mix e-liquid themselves – and it will create a black market.

To protect the children ™ .

ELIMINATION of vape shops, restraint of trade – creating a monopoly for, or eliminating competition for cigarettes and smoking cessation drugs. To protect the children ™ .

Civil disobedience is already here:

There are other implications to protect the children ™ :

This arbitrary decision by Governor Whitmer, challenged or not, has created an unscientific template for the other 49 states to admire, assess, modify and then implement implement to their own needs to protect the children ™.

The American Vaping Association had a press release here.

Mutual Admiration Society member Frank Pallone was quick to show support to Whitmer. I was compelled to ask a silly question:

I can’t take – as a consumer – any threat as an idle threat. If just ONE of these threats, taxes, bans, etc. takes hold… it’s a snowball to hell for everyone. I don’t really believe for one second most understand how swift that hill will accelerate the process.

I’ll readily admit I may not explain things ‘just right’ all the time, so (in the spirit of the name of my blog) I’ll point you in the directions of the links you need to see to better understand why cigarettes are safe in Michigan:

If you are in MICHIGAN, you should already have gone to CASAA here:

Action Center

You should visit Jim McDonald here:

Michigan Governor Bans Flavors by Executive Order

You should see Dr. Siegel here:

Michigan Ban on Flavored E-Cigarettes is a Terrible Policy with Devastating Public Health Consequences

And in accordance with VITN rules, you should go here:

Juul Labs Announces Support For Michigan Flavor Ban

Footnotes:

I found (then Senator) Whitmer announcing legislation (in 2008) to ban “toy” lighters years ago here.

Interestingly, I couldn’t find Whitmer trying to ban cigarettes anywhere (to protect the children ™).

Finally, in my best Morgan Freeman voice:

Cigarettes cannot and shall not be banned and are protected by law, in accordance with the Master Settlement Agreement.

Dr. Gottlieb: E-cigs CAN Help Smokers Quit And Improve Their Health

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, Food and Drug Administration

Dr. Gottlieb of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) tweeted “e-cigs can help currently addicted adult smokers quit; and improve their health.” If you had internet connection issues yesterday, it may have been jolting shocks of horror from ‘experts’ seeing what he tweeted.

This isn’t the first reference to less harm, Dr. Gottlieb has passively stated in the past: “If you could take every adult smoker and fully switch them to e-cigarettes, that would have a substantial public health impact”. He’s also stated:

“E-cigarettes may present an important opportunity for adult smokers to transition off combustible tobacco products and onto nicotine delivery products that may not have the same level of risks associated with them.” (Source)

That’s pretty big news no one is hearing over the incessant chanting from others. If a “substantial public health impact” is a goal, Dr. Gottlieb will have to speak up. (I can barely hear him.) How about, oh – I don’t know, maybe a press conference with a mandatory presence of the alleged “health leaders” for a start.

Source

Dr. Gottlieb will have to speak up if a “substantial public health impact” is a goal:

In the four years (hard to believe, today) since the release of the results of my consumer survey, I have finally seen a credible and official statement saying “e-cigs can help currently addicted adult smokers quit; and improve their health.” from the Commissioner of the FDA.

This isn’t a secret. No one is listening. It’s something consumers have said all along.

Link

Not only did he tweet those words, he also tweeted a follow-up about improved health.

Link

I can’t be so arrogant to believe these tweets came from my urging, but I was shocked to read what Dr. Gottlieb said. Maybe he isn’t using his (this is funny) mute button! I’m skeptical, he’s at least tweeted it – with a comment about improving health. Twice. Vape shops are not permitted to say that. In my book, it’s better than a poke in the eye.

I can’t ask for… Wait, if the goal of reducing smoking is the goal, I’ll expect much more.

In my excitement, I mistakenly linked the Surgeon General from his personal account on a few nudges. However, I included him in other tweets in his “official” capacity. So far, no reference to this new study has been made from his personal or official account.

No “health group” has mentioned Alex Azar’s statement below. This information is NOT foreign to Dr. Adams or Dr. Gottlieb. They were present when U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Secretary Alex Azar spoke these words:

Quote is at 3:35 on this video

No surprise

Those ‘experts‘ I referred to above? The horror must’ve made them leave early to grab their favorite flavored Starbucks coffee. With Gottlieb making a statement like he did, I was eager to see if the American Heart, Lung, Cancer, or even Tobacco-Free Kids may, might, or could have mentioned it.

In conducting a quick general twitter search for the article link and found –ZERO– mentions from those organizations front groups. So much for a public health impact.

If smoking is “the single largest preventable cause of death and illness in the world”… and all “health” organizations are about health,  and improving health, then why does my pal DrMA below need to raise awareness of their omission a day after Gottlieb’s statement …

Picking Up Momentum

Tammy and others went all out:

Link

Our friend James Jarvis did as well.

Link

I’m in the middle

The headlines are wonderful, the truth is the average number of attempts for a smoker to stop is 30. The success rates of gums and patches are about 7%. The average success of e-cigarettes is 70% (low end), or more, and they know it, government funded research proves it. Downplaying it, giving it no attention isn’t informing the public. That doesn’t improve health.

Change The Conversation

It’s time for public health and politicians to make a decision:

They want less smoking, or they don’t.

They want less harm, or they don’t.”

CALL THEM OUT

If making public health a priority and “improving health” is their goal… With all we do know, EVERY single township, official, city, who have regulated, restricted or banned 18, 19, and 20-year-olds from less harm and choice should be questioned – having an opportunity to explain themselves.

EVERY news outlet should be screaming about improving health with e-cigarettes, and interviewing every single township, official, city, health group and expert in the area who restricted or banned those choices.

Consumers (like me) take it upon themselves to blog, tweet, write their representatives out of passion and conviction. If I’m doing it wrong, I’m willing to learn.

This just happened. At least that’s what I heard.
This is 2019. (“Hi, Fig”!)

These are the types of thing you may not be aware you, as a business, giving smokers a healthier option, are up against:

Original Tweet

Sometimes I pick my battles carefully.

Careen is responding to my “Vape Shop” photo. I imagine she’s being engaged with. Link.

It’s time for vape shops/industry to make a decision as well.

I know, love, and respect some business owners who are fighting by themselves for their customers, and future customers, either through a local or state industry organizations. If you’re not aware, you’re not doing yourselves any favors.

If you are in business giving smokers a healthier alternative to smoking and don’t change the conversation quickly with local, state and national lawmakers…… ahh, who am I to say what you should do. After all, it is your business.

I would read about this (here and here, or listen to this man and act accordingly with any representatives about youth, adult choices less harmful products, and more here:

Senator Burr (R-NC) Floor Speech on FDA Ban of Menthol Cigarettes

Senator was also in this discussion with Mitch Zeller in 2014.

Vaping In The News – January 26th, 2019

“Feelings” with Surgeon General Jerome Adams.

Vaping In The News covers media stories on smoking, vaping, snus, heat not burn, e-cigarettes, tobacco control, public health, government, regulations, policies and more worldwide.

“The largest threat to Public Health is an informed consumer.”

You Don’t Know Nicotine ~ The great American youth vaping epidemic. Really? ~ The FDA hearing that wasn’t ~ The Impact of E-Cigarette Warnings ~ Burning Sub-Ohm ~ Bucking Bad Legislation in the Buckeye State ~ Electronic Cigarette Fires and Explosions (U.S.A.) 2009 – 2016 ~ A Meme

You Don’t Know Nicotine

Aaron Biebert, Director of A Billion Lives, announced his new project during his visit in Oklahoma City at Vapers Carnivale:

If you’re interested, you can pitch in as little as $5.00 or much more, with levels and rewards being different, up to and including the “Tater Tot” level!

The Kickstarter campaign is here.

Follow this on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The great American youth vaping epidemic. Really?

With the lack of being a professional statistician or researcher, I did my improvisational best covering the Surgeon General’s affirmation of the U.S. teen ‘epidemic’. I questioned the absence of daily data and babbled about it as I do.

Here, Clive Bates, someone I admire, explains what I could not, well beyond my expectations.

The great American youth vaping epidemic. Really?

The FDA hearing that wasn’t

Speaking of curing children, and a fraudulent epidemic, the FDA took it upon itself to hold a public hearing on the youth vaping “epidemic”. Instead of a balanced conversation between harm reduction proponents and anti-tobacco activists, the hearing became a one-sided stage for fanatics.

The FDA hearing that wasn’t

The Impact of E-Cigarette Warnings

Next up… contrived epidemic. Our friend Chris just below explains the “epidemic” was a plot (graphic below found here) to start with from this tweet in November of last year.

I’m not sure what to call this study. Note it was submitted on the 21st of September 2018. In the theme of warnings, something the ‘epidemic’ was based on, this short paper shows an “online experiment” and ‘“brain” and “chemicals” warnings’ were higher discouraging youth from e-cigarettes.

Well, of course, ” Research should continue”.

The Impact of E-Cigarette Warnings

Burning Sub-Ohm

Paul puts common sense down so even I can understand it. I don’t sub-ohm. I’m certainly no mathematician, but I do understand researchers must have fire extinguishers ready at all times.

An Open Letter to the WHO Executive Board

Aside from the obvious harm reduction, also mentioned:

  • “Courage, creativity, and the ability to seize opportunities”
  • -0- links to industry, independent. (meaning no control of studies either, essential, science/data is clear and independent.)
  • Very low quit rates: Market failure (and “TC/PH” failure in my opinion).
  • Awareness, progress is mentioned (#LOUDER!)
  • Interest of public health (Which leads me to believe this is an opportunity to break the chain of the standard “we don’t know” crowd.)

An Open Letter to the WHO Executive Board

Electronic Cigarette Fires and Explosions (U.S.A.) 2009 – 2016

“Reports of 195 separate e-cigarette fire and explosion incidents in the U.S. were found, dating from January 2009 to Dec 31, 2016. In 68 percent of these incidents, 133 acute injuries were reported. No deaths were reported during the study period.”

A meme.

Over the course of time, I’ve made my share of amateur graphics, “memes”. In the spirit and need for ALL of us to change the conversation, I asked Chris Hughes if I could use his photos for this blog in 2016, and again below.

Thanks to you who’ve shared it. It seems to have hit a nerve.

Honor Among Thieves

The public is convinced tobacco companies pay for the the largest pyramid/ponzi scheme ever created. Smokers pay the ransom to demean themselves – to protect the tobacco companies.

“The major U.S. tobacco companies settled litigation with the states on November 23, 1998, in what is known as the Master Settlement Agreement, which requires the tobacco companies to pay out annually in perpetuity.”

Speaking of paying to bully one’s self

Tobacco products promoted on Facebook despite policies

Since the 1970’s, there has been a ban on the advertising of tobacco. In 1970, President Nixon signed a law called the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act  – banning cigarette ads on T. V. and radio – beginning January 2nd of 1971. (Link). To get around it, media runs combustible tobacco images along side ‘anti-tobacco’ groups –  and has for years.

Side note: The US Government has been secretly recruiting underage smokers since 1992 at an acceptable “noncompliance rate of no more than 20%“.

On August 8, 2016, the United States legally defined and, on National Tobacco Day, “deemed” nicotine as tobacco. Without a doubt, advertising on social media of e-liquid is both self-promoted and promoted by consumers. The government, media and tobacco control continue to do both.

Because I like to tug on short hairs… I’m surprised the e-cigarette market is still legally able to advertise on social media (with the idiotic nicotine warning). While anarchy and mob rules may apply for some, I wonder – with legal definition – just how long advertising will be -ignored- (also federal tobacco taxes imposed) and how long it will take to try to knock it all down – if they could only do it without emotion.

I think the push has started.
